The Gauteng Department of Health has revealed that there has been an increase in the number of newborn babies abandoned in hospitals across the province.  The department released the figures in a written reply to questions in the provincial legislature in Johannesburg. It is reported that every year, over 10 thousand babies are abandoned in South Africa, with the vast majority of them found dead.
