Becoming You

An Interview with My Son Ashwin

Listen Later

In this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I get to ask my son, Ashwin, a few questions about himself!

Tell me about yourself.

Ashwin: I’m eight years old. I’m in second grade. I love my little dog, Cosmo. I love monster trucks. I have a great loft bed. And I want to have a better future if I can.

What do you think I do for a living?

Ashwin: You’re a life coach. You make people feel better by doing breathwork sessions. I thought it was really weird, but I got used to it.

How do you like to spend your time?

Ashwin: I like to spend my time playing with monster trucks with my friends. I love to build legos. My dad helps me make things out of cardboard.

What are you good at?

Ashwin: Baseball and making people feel better. I give the best hugs and tickles. I’m a detective in the house.

What do you know how to do that you could teach me?

Ashwin: Learn how to play with legos.

What are some things in life that make you really upset?

Ashwin: Whenever you guys say “no”. It bugs me when Arya doesn’t play with me. He reads a lot.

What are some things that make you feel good?

Ashwin: Playing with my friends and getting ice cream, especially vanilla and chocolate drenched in sprinkles.

What makes you feel really proud about yourself?

Ashwin: Whenever I do something to help my baseball team. I felt proud when I did my math homework this evening.

What are the affirmations you and I say every night before we go to bed?

Ashwin: I’m kind, I’m smart, I’m brave, I love myself, and I can do everything I set my mind to.

Can you walk the people through something you recently learned about the circle of thoughts, feelings, and actions?

Ashwin: Draw a triangle. Write an “A” (which stands for “actions”) at the top of the triangle, and “F” (which stands for “feelings”) on another side, and a “T” (which stands for “thoughts”) on the last side. So, if I lost my toy, I would write “I lost my toy” on the thought side, “I feel really mad or sad” on the feeling side, and my action would be “get angry” and you would feel it.

What will you do based on this information? If your thought makes you act in a way that you don’t want to act, what could you do with the thought?

Ashwin: Change it and write out a new one.

What is a new thought you can think of?

Ashwin: “I’m sure I can find it. Just not right now.”

Yeah, and you would feel “hopeful”. Then what action would you take?

Ashwin: “Ask for help.”

You can change your thoughts about any situation. This is the very basic premise of mindset training. Our thoughts always lead to certain feelings or emotions which always lead to our action or inaction, which then leads to our results. So, if we want our results to change, we always want to start by changing our thoughts.

Ashwin, what do you do when you want to stop feeling mad?

Ashwin: I squeeze a water bottle. I also punch a pillow. If you have eggshells, don’t throw them away. I can crush them with a potato masher! I also listen to rock and metal in my room.

What is a question that you would like to ask me?

Ashwin: Can I please watch TV?

Well as we're recording this episode folks, it is a Friday night and they get screen time on Friday night. I don't know about your kids but my kids thoughts always seem to be, "When can I get the next sugar rush and when can I get the next screen time?"
