This evening we provide an overture to the High Holidays, the foundation on which each detail of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot rests. Partially based on a lecture by Rabbi YY Jacobson, which in turn is based on a lecture by The Rav, Rabbi Yosef Soloveitchik, we trace the surreal story of Elisha ben Avuya, known to us as Acher. We draw the parallel to every one of us, and how to avoid Acher's tragic fate.
Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation.
