As stewards of what is not our own, like parents caring for children for a short time, we are urged to pursue the kingdom with the same intentional planning we give earthly matters, living as children of light rather than darkness, saved not by good works but for them. In the parable of the prodigal son, the younger rebels by demanding his inheritance, wishing his father dead, squandering everything in reckless living far away until famine and pig-feeding desperation drive him to repent, recognizing his unworthiness. Yet the father runs to embrace him while still far off, interrupting his confession to restore him fully with the best robe, ring, sandals, and a feast celebrating the dead who is alive again, the lost who is found. The older son, resentful outside, reveals his own lostness through self-righteous slavery, resenting unmerited grace because both brothers treated the father as a means to things.
