The salient point of this podcast episode is the exploration of the microbiome and its implications for our understanding of faith, as discussed by Dr. John Pohl. In this enlightening conversation, I, Joshua Noel, engage with Dr. Pohl to uncover how the intricate world of bacteria within us can reflect and enrich our spiritual lives. We delve into the interconnectedness of all life forms, drawing parallels between the health of our microbiome and the communal nature of the Church, as illustrated in scripture, particularly in Paul's epistle to the Corinthians. Dr. Pohl articulates how our collective existence, much like our microbial communities, underscores the necessity of unity and love among individuals. Ultimately, this dialogue invites us to consider how our faith can be informed and deepened by the biological truths surrounding us, prompting a profound reflection on our relationship with both God and one another.

The dialogue between Joshua Noel and Dr. John Pohl unfolds against the backdrop of the intricate world of the human microbiome, juxtaposed with theological reflections on unity and community within the church. Dr. Pohl elucidates how the microbial inhabitants of our bodies are not merely biological entities but serve as a profound metaphor for understanding our interconnectedness as individuals and as a community of faith. Drawing from the scriptural insights of 1 Corinthians 12, he posits that just as the body is composed of many parts, so too is the body of Christ enriched by the diversity of its members. This symbiotic relationship between our microbiome and our faith challenges us to reconsider how we engage with one another, emphasizing compassion and understanding amidst a landscape currently marred by division and anger. The conversation navigates through the scientific complexities of microbiomes while simultaneously drawing parallels to the theological implications of being part of a larger community, ultimately advocating for a holistic approach to both health and spirituality.

In a thought-provoking discussion, Dr. John Pohl and Joshua Noel delve into the intricate relationship between the human microbiome and Christian theology. Dr. Pohl draws on the scriptural metaphor of the Church as a body, highlighting how the myriad of bacteria within us can teach profound lessons about unity, diversity, and interdependence. The conversation explores how microbiomes are not merely biological systems but can also serve as a lens through which to view our relationships with one another and with God. Dr. Pohl articulates that understanding our microbiomes can lead to greater humility and empathy, as it underscores our shared humanity and the importance of caring for one another. The episode invites listeners to consider how nurturing their microbiome parallels nurturing their faith community, ultimately encouraging a deeper engagement with both science and spirituality as interconnected realms of understanding.

Takeaways:

• The microbiome serves as a powerful metaphor for understanding community within the church, illustrating how diversity contributes to a unified body of believers.
• Dr. John Pohl emphasizes the importance of treating our neighbors with love and respect, paralleling how our microbiome interacts for the health of the human body.
• Unity in the church can be enhanced by recognizing our interdependence, much like the relationship between various microorganisms within our microbiomes.
• The conversation highlights how our physical health, exemplified by a balanced microbiome, can influence our mental well-being and spiritual perceptions.
• Dr. Pohl's insights reveal that our understanding of God can be enriched by acknowledging the intricate connections we share with the microbial life within us.
• The episode underscores the significance of embracing science in theological discussions, advocating for a harmonious relationship between faith and empirical understanding.

Renowned theologian Dr. Thomas Jay Oord joins the dynamic trio of Andy Walsh, Kevin Schaeffer, and TJ Blackwell on a philosophical rollercoaster ride through the murky waters of destiny and free will, all sparked by the mind-bending narrative of *The Minority Report*. The conversation kicks off with a bold assertion that we don't get to pick our beliefs; they pick us instead, setting the stage for a deep dive into what justice, redemption, and the future mean in this context. The hosts and Dr. Oord explore the implications of a world where crimes can be predicted before they happen, asking whether such foresight strips away moral responsibility or if it actually enhances it. As they unpack the film's complex themes, they also manage to weave in humor and light-hearted banter, making for a relaxed yet intellectually stimulating discussion. Get ready for some thought-provoking insights on how this sci-fi flick mirrors real-world dilemmas about choice and consequence, sprinkled with a healthy dose of wit!

The dialogue begins with Amandi and the regular crew – TJ and Kevin – introducing their special guest, Thomas J. Ord, a leading voice in theology and philosophy. They jump right into the philosophical deep end, discussing how beliefs shape identities, akin to the narrative of 'Minority Report'. The film serves as a jumping-off point for a broader conversation about morality, justice, and the implications of predictive policing in a society that punishes individuals for crimes they haven't yet committed. The hosts grapple with the ethical dilemmas presented in the film, questioning the nature of free will in a world where the future seems predetermined by technology.

As the episode unfolds, it becomes clear that the hosts share a genuine camaraderie, interspersing serious philosophical discourse with light-hearted anecdotes about their personal experiences with the film. TJ's excitement about the latest zombie video game contrasts sharply with the weighty themes of the movie, providing a refreshing balance of humor and intellect. This blend of personal narrative and philosophical inquiry keeps listeners engaged while prompting them to reflect on the complexities of choice, morality, and the impact of technology on human behavior. The conversation flows naturally from one topic to another, showcasing the hosts' ability to intertwine their geeky interests with profound questions about society and justice.

As the episode draws to a close, the hosts hint at a bonus segment that promises to delve deeper into the film's predictions about the future, inviting listeners to reflect on how these themes are already playing out in today's world. Their banter remains witty and relaxed, ensuring that even the most profound topics are accessible and engaging for all audiences. This episode not only serves as a tribute to 'Minority Report' but also encourages listeners to consider their own beliefs about morality, justice, and the choices they make in a rapidly changing world.

Takeaways:

• The film 'Minority Report' raises profound questions about free will and determinism, making viewers ponder how much control we truly have over our actions.
• Dr. Thomas Jay Oord emphasizes that our beliefs often choose us, particularly regarding concepts of justice and morality, rather than the other way around.
• The discussion dives into the implications of predicting future crimes, questioning the morality of punishing individuals for actions they haven't yet committed.
• The precogs in 'Minority Report' present an intriguing paradox: while they can foresee future events, their visions are not infallible, reflecting the complexities of knowledge and free will.
• The hosts explore how the technology depicted in 'Minority Report' resonates with our current reality, especially as advancements in AI and surveillance become more prevalent.
• The conversation highlights the parallels between the film's narrative and theological discussions, particularly around the nature of divine foreknowledge and moral responsibility.

"I didn't know that wizards could do Kung Fu too."

Happy Halloween and welcome to my dojo, this is Kung Fu Pizza Party. Today, I sit down to review Kung Fu from Beyond the Grave starring Billy Chong. This movie makes my old man bones smile. It's short, and gets right to the point. Revenge, ghost from hell style. It might not be that scary, but it doesn't has a very spooky aestetic along with some scary good sidekicks. You at least have to watch long enough to see a vampire explode from being hit with garlic.

Christian Ashley and Dr. Leah Robinson dive into the epic showdown of horror icons in this Halloween special, tackling the 2003 flick "Freddy vs. Jason." Right off the bat, they tackle the burning question: do we really lose if either Freddy or Jason comes out on top? As they kick back in their spooky drive-in seats, the duo reflects on the film's unique blend of slasher lore and the sheer absurdity of two legendary monsters squaring off. With witty banter and a sprinkle of nostalgia, they dissect the film's merits and flaws, exploring everything from character depth to iconic moments that make this crossover a cult classic in its own right. As the final episode of this year’s Halloween Drive-In, the conversation flows with both humor and insight, leaving listeners pondering the true cost of horror fandom in a polarized world.

Systematic Geekology dives into a spine-tingling showdown that has long been the subject of debate among horror aficionados: the epic clash between Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. The episode kicks off with a rather cheeky question posed by the host, Christian Ashley, about whether fans truly ‘lose’ if either of these iconic horror figures emerges victorious in their infamous battle. Joined by first-time co-host Dr. Leah Robinson, the episode serves as a reflective and lively discussion on the cultural significance of these two titans of terror as they navigate through their respective legacies. The dynamic between the hosts is infectious, with Leah sharing her insights, adding depth to the conversation while also peppering it with her witty commentary. They reminisce about previous films in the franchises, sparking nostalgia and laughter as they highlight their favorite moments from the slasher genre, all while maintaining a relaxed and humorous tone that makes the listener feel right at home.

As the discussion progresses, they delve deeper into the mechanics of the film ‘Freddy vs. Jason’, exploring the plot intricacies and the absurdity that comes with crossover films. Leah humorously critiques the film’s premise, revealing her kinder disposition towards it compared to her feelings about ‘Aliens vs. Predator’. The conversation flows effortlessly as they touch upon the philosophical and ethical questions raised by the film's narrative—most notably, the moral implications of sedating people to prevent Freddy from haunting their dreams. This segment showcases their critical thinking and ability to engage with deeper topics while still keeping the tone light and entertaining. Leah’s candid reflections on the characters’ motivations and the film’s execution resonate as they both grapple with the horror genre's tropes and clichés, leading to a rich exploration of what makes a horror film compelling—or not.

In wrapping up their analysis, Christian and Leah share their ratings of the film, revealing their differing perspectives while still finding common ground in their love for the genre. The episode concludes with some light-hearted banter about Halloween treats inspired by the film, showcasing their playful camaraderie. The hosts invite listeners to engage with the show by suggesting future topics, reinforcing the community aspect of Cismic Ecology, and leaving fans eager for what’s to come. This episode is not just a review of a film but a celebration of horror cinema, encouraging listeners to reflect on their own experiences with the genre and to embrace the joys of geekdom together.

Takeaways:

• Christian Ashley and Leah Robinson dive deep into the intricacies of horror icons Freddy and Jason, examining their motivations and the themes of fear and power in 'Freddy vs. Jason'.
• They joke about the absurdity of the film's premise, questioning the logic behind a battle between two supernatural beings and the concept of winning or losing in such a scenario.
• The hosts emphasize the importance of relatable characters in slasher films, lamenting the lack of depth in the human cast of 'Freddy vs. Jason' which detracted from the horror experience.
• Leah appreciates the nostalgic thrill of slasher films yet critiques the film's failure to create compelling stakes for its characters, leaving viewers detached from the action.
• Christian and Leah reflect on the ethical implications of the film's premise—sedating people to erase fear of Freddy—posing questions about the morality of suppressing knowledge for safety's sake.
• The episode wraps up with the hosts rating 'Freddy vs. Jason', highlighting its entertaining moments but ultimately acknowledging it as a mixed bag that could have been so much more.

Joshua Noel, Justin Coleman, and Alex Matthews dive into the multiverse of storytelling this week as they dissect the epic narratives of Loki Season 2 and the Doctor Who episode, "The Story in the Engine." Right from the get-go, they ponder whether our narratives are preordained or if we wield the quill to write our own tales, with Loki's chaotic charm and the Doctor's whimsical wisdom leading the charge. The trio breaks down the fundamental themes of control versus freedom, showcasing how Loki, the God of Mischief, opts to hold stories together, while the Doctor liberates narratives by cutting loose the constraints. While they navigate through time travel conundrums, they also explore the cultural ramifications of these beloved characters and their unique journeys. With humor and insightful banter flowing freely, listeners are in for a thought-provoking ride through time, narrative, and the essence of storytelling itself.

The episode delves into the often-contentious relationship between conservative Christianity, particularly as represented by the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), and the scientific community. Through the insights of Dr. Benjamin Phillips and Dr. David Perry, we explore how individuals can perceive God through the lens of scientific inquiry, specifically in fields such as chemistry and ecology. The discussion reveals that the doctrines of creation and the understanding of God's presence in the natural world can coexist harmoniously with scientific exploration and understanding. We examine the misconceptions that many hold regarding the tension between faith and science, demonstrating that a more nuanced perspective can lead to greater unity within the church and a fuller appreciation of God's handiwork in creation. Ultimately, this conversation invites listeners to reconsider their views on the interplay of faith and science, promoting a more integrated approach to understanding both realms.

The inaugural episode of the miniseries "The Whole Church Science Fair" features a profound dialogue between hosts Joshua Noel and TJ Blackwell and esteemed guests Dr. Benjamin Phillips, the Dean of Christian Studies at Charleston Southern University, and Dr. David Perry, an Associate Professor of Chemistry. This episode delves into the intricate relationship between conservative Christianity, particularly as represented by the Southern Baptist Convention, and the scientific community. It challenges the prevailing notion that these two realms are perpetually at odds, particularly concerning issues such as creationism and evolution. The guests articulate how the doctrines of creation can coexist with scientific inquiry, particularly in chemistry and ecology, emphasizing the pursuit of knowledge as a means of understanding God's handiwork in the natural world. They explore how scientific endeavors can illuminate the divine attributes of God, fostering a dialogue that seeks to bridge the gaps between faith and science, ultimately advocating for a more harmonious relationship between the two.

Takeaways:

• In the inaugural episode of our miniseries "The Whole Church Science Fair", we engage with Dr. Benjamin Phillips and Dr. David Perry to explore the intersection of conservative Christianity and scientific inquiry, specifically within the context of the Southern Baptist Convention.
• The dialogue reveals a common misconception that conservative churches, particularly the Southern Baptist Convention, are inherently antagonistic towards the scientific community, largely due to historical tensions surrounding issues such as evolution and creationism.
• We discuss how the study of chemistry can illuminate the grandeur of God’s creation, emphasizing that scientific discovery can enhance our understanding of divine work rather than diminish it.
• Dr. Perry articulates a stewardship ethic concerning ecological work, asserting that humanity's role in creation is to cultivate and enhance the natural world rather than exploit it, reflecting the biblical mandate found in Genesis.
• The episode challenges listeners to consider how a deeper engagement with both scripture and scientific principles can foster unity within the church, particularly amidst differing interpretations of controversial topics such as the age of the earth and human origins.
• By understanding diverse historical interpretations of Genesis, listeners may find common ground with fellow believers, promoting a spirit of cooperation rather than division in discussions surrounding faith and science.

Welcome to my dojo, this is Kung Fu Pizza Party. Today, we head south of the US boarder to invade a lucha libre wrestling ring as I review Santo and Blue Demon Against the Monsters. Santo and Blue Demon were the biggest stars in the ring for several decades in Mexico, and still to this day Santo and Blue Demon's fame live on. Explore the world of their films with me as two barrel chested men take on haordes of monsters in this whacky late night horror flick.
