This week, a man with a true eye for beauty in art and architecture joins me. Andrew Gould is an artisan and designer specializing in traditional buildings and liturgical art. Andrew has designed dozens of new buildings, renovations, and custom liturgical furnishings. His practice is based in Charleston, South Carolina, and his residential and commercial work is focused within the Charleston Historic District. When designing churches and liturgical art, Andrew works in the Eastern Orthodox traditions (Byzantine and Russian), and his work can be found throughout North America and beyond. We discuss the awful state of ugly modern architecture and how it relates to our souls. When did we lose beauty and love in regards to art and architecture? Do some architects purposely make things evil and ugly? Are beautiful old style buildings too expensive to build these days? Andrew also discusses the importance of making American Orthodox Churches not only beautiful but respectful to and of the local culture. Should we put a strictly Russian-looking Church in the heart of a southern state like South Carolina? We get into all of this and more.
