Grace is a beautiful singer and an up and coming songwriter. Her latest single "Out of Commission" is a fun and poignant tune speaking to those days that go 2020 on us. (2020 is now a verb.)

We talk about the song, her creative process, the creative destruction COVID have forced onto artists, and her struggles with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PDD).

Hailed for his “rhythmic integrity, singing tone quality, and refinement” (Clavier), Swedish-American pianist Elias-Axel Pettersson has established himself as a formidable soloist, chamber musician, and pedagogue. A Mason & Hamlin Concert Artist, he has garnered prizes on the national and international level. In 2008, Pettersson formed Duo Giocoso with French violinist Roland Arnassalon; in 2017, he formed Æterna Sirius with pianist Jessica Yam. Pettersson champions contemporary composers, premiering Michael Mauldin’s Petroglyph for Piano (2011), among other works. Pettersson has three albums on the Axel Records label and has cultivated a loyal online following through his website and YouTube channel. He has been a jury member for numerous regional and national competitions.

Pettersson is a frequent performer, lecturer, and masterclass teacher throughout the USA, Canada, and Sweden. He is known as a conscientious, patient, and motivational guide, combining his extensive music theory and history background with Alexander Technique in creating a methodical, yet holistic and creative approach. In 2015, Pettersson founded Southwest Piano Festival; in 2018, he became Director of Program Development for Arizona Piano Institute, where he has lectured, taught masterclasses, and performed alongside faculty artists including Nelita True, Elisabeth and Eugene Pridonoff, Pavlina Dokovska, Yuri Kot, and Eckart Sellheim and Dian Baker. In 2019, Pettersson joined the faculty at Adamant Music School and Arizona School for the Arts.

Pettersson studied with Paul Stewart, Sergei Babayan, Larissa Dedova, Douglas Humpherys, and Maribeth Gunning; he also played for André Watts, Jean-Bernard Pommier, Arnaldo Cohen, Pavel Nersessian, Dina Joffe, and the Guarneri String Quartet. Pettersson holds a doctorate from l’Université de Montréal.

It's October of 2020 and this month is the the 70th Anniversary of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe's publication. If there is one person on the planet that I could have on the show to talk about this classic C.S. Lewis story, it is Dr. Michael Ward. Fortunately for you, my dear listeners, he was gracious enough to spend the time celebrating with us this tremendous book.

I say this carefully, If you think you know the Narnia series but you are unaware of Michael's work, you don't. His insights will open up a whole new layer of understanding that will enrich your experience and awaken in you the genius of Lewis' "children's stories." 

Michael Ward is Senior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford, and Professor of Apologetics at HBU. He is the author of the award-winning Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis (Oxford University Press) and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis (Cambridge University Press).

Though based at Blackfriars in Oxford, Dr Ward is also employed as Professor of Apologetics at Houston Baptist University, Texas, teaching one course per semester as part of the online MA program in Christian Apologetics.

On the fiftieth anniversary of Lewis’s death (22 November 2013), Professor Ward unveiled a permanent national memorial to him in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey.  He is the co-editor of a volume of commemorative essays marking the anniversary, entitled C.S. Lewis at Poets’ Corner (2016).

 

Michael Ward presented the BBC television documentary, The Narnia Code (2009), directed and produced by the BAFTA-winning film-maker, Norman Stone.  He authored an accompanying book entitled The Narnia Code: C.S. Lewis and the Secret of the Seven Heavens (Tyndale House, USA / Paternoster, UK).

 

Michael was resident Warden of The Kilns, Lewis’s Oxford home, from 1996 to 1999.  He studied English at Oxford, Theology at Cambridge, and has a PhD in Divinity from St Andrews.  Further details of his CV are available here.

Getting to know Jerry is a joy. His knowledge is deep and his lifelong passion for the work of C.S. Lewis as well as the Gospel of Jesus Christ is evident and contagious. Enjoy and share this episode with your friends.

Jerry Root is a graduate of Whittier College and Talbot Graduate School of Theology at Biola University, both located in Southern California. He received his Ph.D. from the Open University through the Oxford Centre for Missions Studies. He has written C. S. Lewis and a Problem of Evil: An Investigation of a Pervasive Theme, and is the co-editor, with Wayne Martindale, of the bestselling, and award winning, The Quotable C. S. Lewis. He wrote, with Stan Guthrie, The Sacrament of Evangelism and published The Surprising Imagination of C. S. Lewis and The Neglected C. S. Lewis with Mark Neal. His most recent book is Dymer: A Splendour in the Dark. Jerry has contributed articles to many edited works about C. S. Lewis and has published numerous articles about Lewis, Apologetics, Evangelism, Discipleship, and Spiritual Formation.

Jerry has lectured on C. S. Lewis at 78 Universities in 18 different countries. He is a popular speaker at C. S. Lewis conferences around the world. He is currently serving as the Director of the Institute for Strategic Evangelism at the Wheaton College Billy Graham Center, where he also teaches in the Christian Formation and Ministry Department and in the Evangelism and Leadership MA program. Jerry is also a visiting professor at Talbot Graduate School of Theology and Biola University. Jerry is passionate about faith-integrated liberal arts. This grows out of his interest in Lewis, it has also informed his work in evangelism, and spiritual formation, which he believes, is the superlative outcome of a faith-integrated education. He and his wife, Claudia, have four grown children, all of whom are married, and fifteen grandchildren.
