Upon hearing what God was doing through Moses, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, decided to visit. During the visit, Jethro saw the inefficient way Moses was handling the people’s disputes and so he advised Moses of a better way. Jethro’s plan was simple—get help! Jethro’s advice was for the good of Moses and the people. There are several things we can learn from this encounter. First, you can do the right thing the wrong way. Second, we see that we need to be open to people’s advice and a fresh perspective. And third, the adage, “many hands make light work” is sound. Through this encounter we also learn about delegation, trusting others, and interdependence.

They were hungry. God sent manna. They were thirsty. God sent water gushing from a rock. Another time He made the bitter waters sweet again, so they could drink. Every day there was a miracle right before their eyes. Over and over, God provided for their needs. And just as the people of Israel had to look to God to meet their needs, to be refreshed by what He offered, and to gather manna every morning in the wilderness, so it is with us. His provision and blessing never run dry. Every day, His miracles are right before our eyes. We just must choose to look for them and stay close in His presence. God never runs out of resources.

He loves us and desires to set His protection over us. He will hem us in from all sides and keep us under His care. He just tells us to be still, to stand strong, and to know He’s fighting on our behalf.

Jesus modeled the best way to do this while He was on earth—through relational discipleship. He spent three years training His followers to create new disciples. Discipleship goes beyond evangelism. The discipleship process is more than teaching people the right knowledge about God. It means teaching people how to know and be like Jesus—to obey God and seek His best for their lives. It means to invest your life in someone in order to impart the things that God has put into your life. All Christians are called to be disciple makers and every one of us is responsible to help those around us to grow in faith.
