The pond at dawn is perfectly still, holding a breath it's had two years to practice holding. Andrik kneels at the edge, the frost now reaching his throat, and says the one name he came two years and one impossible bargain to say into this water.

What comes up out of the pond doesn't rise gently — nothing owed this long returns gently — but it rises whole, gasping, warm, unmistakably alive. Green eyes, exactly as Wren remembered them. A woman looking less like she's surfacing and more like something the water has only just finished building.

Andrik pulls her onto the bank not caring about anything except reaching her before whatever brought her back changes its mind. Behind them, unseen by either of them, the frost takes its next payment in full view of the daylight — and only Wren, still watching from the bank, sees it happen.

The land itself starts changing under their feet — grass sparser, birdsong gone entirely, and the thin places no longer scattering or testing him. They gather instead, dozens of them, watching, patient, the way a crowd gathers before something everyone already knows the shape of.

By dusk, they crest the final hill, and below them, smaller than he remembers and lit strangely gold at the edges, is the pond. Tomorrow, Andrik says.
