Andy's Things and Stuff

This weeks episode, and probably next week’s episode are going to be different. My family had our collective hearts broken on Friday, August 25, 2023. My dad, Tom Erickson, was driving to Sioux Falls on old 77, nine miles north of Beresford, when a man driving a giant tractor hauling silage, blew through the stop sign and collided with his car. He died on impact. I speak for a couple of minutes about how great Dad was, and then I play the episode I recorded with him back in March. Mourn with me for the first few minutes, then laugh along with us as I hang out with my dad and hear him tell stories in the way that only he could.

Former USPSA President, current USPSA presidential candidate, Yee-Min Lin was at Area 3 in Nebraska and I was able to catch up with him to record a podcast. We had a great conversation. Other topics: Going from Western Kentucky to Yale to Iraq in the Marine Corps, how we got into USPSA, why Yee-Min is running again after being removed on a selectively enforced technicality, how clubs deal with their home ranges, our thoughts on Area 3 shooting and working, Multigun Nationals, and I ask him why people should vote for him in the special election runoff.

My dad is back on the podcast this week. He was full of more stories, and we laughed so much. So much so that this 4 hour recording session is split into two episodes. Other topics: Taking Esia to airsoft, Shit details in the Marines, Flying commercial planes, famous people he flew, colorful people he flew, how Mom thought he died in a plane crash, that time Andy Interviewed Hillary Clinton, How Tom ended up in the SD Air National Guard, why dad was gone when I was born, traveling the world in the air guard, the difference between the air guard and the Air Force, pranks and goofing off in the old days on base, the movie M*A*S*H is superior to the TV show M*A*S*H but the book M*A*S*H is better than both.

Josh Vanden Top is a shooting buddy, a dad, a designer of tooling, and self-identifies as a 3-gunner. He and I both shot at USPSA Multigun Nationals in Forest Lake Minnesota in late July, and he was a storm chaser. We talk a lot of shooting, but we also talk about dad life, storm chasing, and how he designs tools that someone makes so other people can make other stuff with the tools (I think I understood that).

Stacy Maier is a mother, wife, empty nester, grandmother, and a podcast guest for the first time all before she turns 50. (She wanted to do 50 things before she turned 50 and one of them was a podcast.) She works in insurance, and also sells Damsel in Defense products to help women defend themselves. She also told her story of having a husband go through rehab. She tells it in a touching and funny way. It was a great episode!

A couple of weeks ago, Tash and I were guests on the Lunch Box podcast, hosted by Mike, Ryan, and Amber. This episode includes "some" of the crazy talk from before we officially were recording for their episode. I decided to include it. It was a lot of fun!

My youngest finally decided he wanted to do a podcast, so we did! Esia is a funny kid so you will enjoy it. He also has an encyclopedic brain full of history, trivia, airsoft, and music knowledge, mostly learned from YouTube. We had fun, hope you enjoy!
