Hello and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!
The first reason I love this word is because it has remained the same since ancient times, despite the shifts in meaning. The second reason is that it’s 3 words in one. ‘A’ is a prefix and means without, if the root word begins with a vowel, then it becomes ‘ΑΝ’. Eκ (aek) is a preposition and it means ‘from’ and διδωμι (dodomi) is an ancient Greek verb meaning ‘I offer’. The original noun is εκδοσις (ekdosis) ´an offer´. In ancient Greek it was used for different things but the one that survived to this day is, ‘to publish’. An offer, to everyone. In modern Greek, something that hasn’t been published or a funny story that goes around by word of mouth or, something that is well known but never put in print is an ΑΝΕΚΔΟΤΟ/ANECDOTE
