In this video I go over the circulatory system of animals, which typically involves blood being pumped by the heart to and from the rest of the body. Vertebrate animals have closed circulatory systems, while arthropods / mollusca is open to the surrounding environment. In mammals such as humans, blood is oxygenated in the lungs, then travels to the heart, which then gets pumped to the rest of the body through a network of capillaries, before returning back as the heart relaxes. Each compression and relaxation of the heart is called the heart cycle or heartbeat. The normal adult resting heart rate is between 60 to 100 beats per minute (bpm).
