The book of Revelation is the pulling back of the curtain so that we can see what the future of God's people will be. This revelation is our glorious hope as we look to Jesus in these days of tribulation and know for sure he is coming back to take us home.

As the destruction and rancid stench of the punishment of rebellious humanity takes its course, we enter chapter 21 with a new vision and it is one of glorious hope! John sees the new heaven and the new earth, creation restored, and the new Jerusalem coming down to earth. This Jerusalem is nothing compared to the city found in Israel. Today’s Jerusalem is only a pointer to the heavenly one, which is adored as a bride for her bridegroom. At last all the suffering of this world will come to an end for God’s people and they will be with him forever.

But chapter 21 also warns us about who won’t be in heaven and it is confronting for those who have rejected God’s way of salvation through Jesus. Their punishment is to be cast in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur. The only way we can enter the glorious kingdom of God is by trusting in Jesus Christ, that his sacrifice on Calvary’s cross is enough to satisfy God’s wrath toward our sin.

As humanity we often look back to history. The question is do we learn from it? The people of God singing Psalm 79 are called to look back to remember what God has done for them. It begins with the problem they find themselves in. They see Jerusalem razed to the ground by Gentile nations. This has happened because of their unfaithfulness. They then bring their plea to God to punish those who have disregarded his holy place. Their plea gives way to penitence, knowing that it is their sin that has removed them from the land, leading them to seek God preservation of them as they affirm their trust in him.

Psalm 75 encourages God's people to exercise patience while awaiting the divine judgment upon those who have wronged them. The thousand years, or millennium, has caused faithful Christians to think deeply about its meaning with three main approaches to it: premillennialism, postmillennialism and Amillennialism. Turning to the second half of chapter 19 of Revelation John sees heaven opened and a white horse coming towards him. Here he is seeing a sovereign ruler coming to judge righteously the wicked and rebellious of the world. He comes to vindicate the dead of the martyrs, his people, and leads the army of his people in victory over evil.

As the scene unfolds we see the destruction of the beast and the false prophet, who no longer can deceive the world with their lies and face the punishment they deserve. They don't give up without a fight, but it is futile as Christ is the victor.

This is what gives us hope as we read this section. Jesus is coming again and will conquer his enemies meaning that we, the people of God, can rejoice for all eternity in his victory.
