In the latest episode of The CFI Podcast, we spoke with Kevin Edgson, president and CEO of EACOM Timber Corporation, board chair of the Forest Products Association of Canada and a member of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s board of directors, about the challenge of attracting younger people to the industry.

One reason why fewer young workers have been entering the industry is the outdated perception of the industry and associated opportunities, Edgson explained.

“I think the perception rests in the old view that it was very labour intensive and a harsh environment when, in fact, there’s some really interesting technologies, it’s sustainable, it’s green, it’s an environment that’s not an office,” he said.

As a result, the industry needs to communicate and engage society to help them understand what the industry is about, how industry sustainably manages forests, the technology involved and the available career paths, Edgson said.
