Some of us, me included grew up thinking that putting yourself first was in some way selfish. When I started to become overwhelmed in my life I had no idea how to put myself first without feeling guilty and therefore ran myself into the ground helping others and abandoning myself completely.
Times have changed for me since then as I had to learn the hard way when I hit rock bottom so hard I had no choice but to change my life. I finally learned that putting myself first was the healthy and appropriate thing to do and that I was more important than anyone else in terms of my own survival.
Self care comes in many forms and is different for everyone but the basic concept is the same. Taking time to repair and recharge yourself physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually is paramount to feeling content and happy in life.
Self care for some it is a workout, or getting your nails done and a massage, for others it is a day off, going shopping, exercising or educating ones self. Whatever it looks like make sure you add to your list of self care tools to widen your options and stop you getting bored of doing the same thing.
However self care looks to you make sure you participate it in every day. There is only one you and regardless of anything else you are important and valuable so look after numero uno and the rewards will be worth it.
Oh and don't forget the more we take care of ourselves the more the people we love will thank us for it, as they are the ones we take it out on when we become unbalanced. The grumpy, tired, stressed, overwhelmed person we morph into really is no fun to be around for anyone. So take time for you and start being the person you really are! Good luck x
