President and co-founder of Angel City Football Club, Julie Uhrman, is my guest this week on Another Door Opens. Angel City is a new women’s professional soccer team that’s coming to Los Angeles in 2022, and it was founded by three women: Actor and activist Natalie Portman, venture capitalist Kara Nortman and entrepreneur Julie Uhrman. Just this week, head coach and assistant coaching positions were announced, as was the first player. Julie has been named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company and one of the Creative 50 by Ad Age. Previously, she served as EVP & GM of Over-The-Top Ventures for Lionsgate, building and managing the company’s multiple streaming franchises. In 2013, she founded and was CEO of OUYA, a pioneering Android-based game console for the living room, which raised a record-breaking $8.6 Million through Kickstarter and then went on to secure venture funding from Kleiner Perkins and Alibaba before selling to Razer in 2015.

Julie is leading the charge to build a National Women’s Soccer League franchise that merges mission and capital, along with a team of celebrity investors including Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams, their two year old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, Billie Jean King, America Ferrera, Jennifer Garner, Uzo Aduba, Abby Wambach, Eva Longoria, Mia Hamm and many more.

This is a minisode! After returning to the United States from my recent trip to Tokyo, Japan, to cover the 2020 Olympic Games in 2021, I wanted to give you this as a small offering. Jill Morley is my guest this week on the podcast. She is a filmmaker, screenwriter, boxer and boxing coach. I admire Jill Morley for many reasons, foremost among them is her willingness to share some of the things she has lived and experienced in her life as a means to help others. This week on Another Door Opens, we talk about the documentary film she directed, Fight Like A Girl, which set out to explore the stories of a few female boxers and why they fight, but it was also an exploration of Jill’s own mental health struggles, where they started and how she used boxing to confront and combat some painful memories. That journey became a fight all its own for Jill — one she generously shares with the audience. That is the kind of artist Jill is: truthful, unfiltered, honest.

When someone has the courage to be vulnerable, as Jill does, it gives a reminder that we can own our life experiences without judgment. And in doing so, the person who chooses to be open, is often rewarded with a feeling of being free.

Cecilia Braekhus is known as The First Lady of Boxing. Her career has encompassed many firsts, including becoming the first woman in any weight class to hold the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles simultaneously. She reigned as the undisputed female welterweight champion from 2014 to 2020 until that string was broken in 2020.
