With Corey Fonville on drums and Hammond organist Sam Fribush,  Fonville + Fribush is a groove-based band with an undeniable deep-pocket rhythm that feels equally at home in a neighborhood bar, a record collection, or a long drive home after work. 

Their new album, Blue Collar Jazz, featuring guitarist Alan Good Parker, embraces the idea that jazz is not exclusive but accessible. We’ll get into the roots of the Hammond organ tradition, the chemistry between organ and drums, and what it means to create jazz that connects immediately with listeners. Pinson introduces his dynamic new band, Boom Clap, exploring its forward-looking sound, the inspiration behind the project, and how he's blending jazz tradition with fresh energy and modern grooves.

On this episode of Another Sound, we explore how the music and spirit of John Coltrane continue to move through contemporary jazz, not as a monument to the past, but as a living current. Joined by saxophonists Isaiah Collier and Lakecia Benjamin, the conversation traces the ways Coltrane’s legacy still shapes improvisation, composition, spirituality, and artistic risk today.

Rather than focusing on tribute or imitation, Collier and Benjamin reflect on what it means to inherit a restless musical language, one built on curiosity, discipline, openness, and transformation. Together, they discuss how Coltrane’s influence extends beyond technique or repertoire and into the deeper question of how artists pursue honesty and freedom through their sound.  The inaugural Santa Monica International Jazz Festival celebrates the 100-year anniversaries of Miles Davis and John Coltrane with a cross-generational pool of musicians impacted by their legacies.  Artistic director and legendary bassist Stanley Clarke reflects on formative encounters with Davis; the lasting influence of John Coltrane; and the importance of mentorship. Drummer Vincent Wilburn, nephew of Miles Davis, offers personal remembrances of his uncle’s vision and impact on and off the bandstand. Rising voices Natasha Agrama and Emilio Modeste of Instant Alter share how they transform guidance from mentors into bold, original music. Together, these conversations trace a lineage of knowledge passed from generation to generation. As all of these artists prepare to appear at the festival, our episode weaves their stories into a larger portrait of jazz as a living tradition built on courage and connection.
