Today’s guest, Mary Brook is a passionate self development coach, mentor and facilitator helping older adults age well, stay connected and participate in life-long learning. She retired from a career of community counseling and put her professional and personal experience to work by supporting others whose desire is to live vitally into their later years. As a woman in long-term recovery from substance addiction, she has a special place in her heart for those with similar stories who want to continue the good life, in new ways.
Have you ever heard that voice inside say to you, “It’s Time?”
Today’s guest, Mary Brook, shares her “It was Time” story about freedom, bravery and starting over at 59 years old.
Bravery begins when you go from certainty to uncertainty and allow your Faith and Spiritual practices guide you along the way.
Mary went from living in the city for 40 years, a 20 year marriage that ended and learned how a 12 Step lifestyle would help change her life for the better.
Mary begins her day with a morning breathing meditation that gets her going and lasts 15 minutes. If needed, she may do it twice a day, but every morning for sure.
Her starting over journey began living in the city, Denver, for two years. And a big part of that was that she was aware she was a country girl living in the city. Then she got married and adapted to the city much better. She married a city guy and forgot how much of a country girl she really was, living in the city. When that love story ended, she was 54 and realized she was free to think about what was next.
After a few years, she started getting strong sensory signs that it was time to go. Her thinking was aligned with that, and she was really connected to land and big birds. There were two kinds of birds, pelicans and owls, that visited her at times when her soul and spirit were open.
It enriched her life to know that there are allies out in the world that help her make decisions and stay in touch with her soul, as it can get confusing making these decisions.
This city girl for 40 years needed wide open spaces.
Doing something she had never done before, she packed a 16 foot U-haul truck, with everything she owned, being a bit of a minimalist, and put her car on a bed behind it. The time came for her to drive out of Denver and drive cross country. Although it was a joyous time, she grieved the life she just left. Basically, she left all her friends, much history, a couple college degrees, a marriage of 20 years and headed to her home state of Oregon.
It was the land of open spaces, mountains, rivers, that she was going to and without any doubt, knew she would love it. What she didn't know was what she was going to do when she got there. Her faith, and the spiritual energy that was aligning with her, gave her the confidence she needed to move forward no matter what!
