Far from being a side-issue, the age of the earth is vital to consistent gospel witness. Many Christians may have never considered the damage to the concept of biblical authority that adopting the secular timescale has done.

Claiming that something must be true because there’s no evidence to say otherwise is a logical fallacy called Appeal to Ignorance. Another version of this fallacy is the Argument from Incredulity, which suggests something must be false because it’s hard to imagine being true. Here’s how to recognize—and avoid using—both fallacies in creation-evolution contexts.

Some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you."  - Luke 11:15-20

One of the most instinctive and obvious arguments for the existence of God is the incredible design we find in nature. But if God created everything, why are things so unintelligently designed?

Textbooks may accuse biblical creationists of using logical fallacies to defend their beliefs. It’s possible to use bad logic to argue for something true, so calling a message false because someone uses fallacies to defend it…is a fallacy. Still, bad logic lowers apparent credibility. To learn how to avoid using bad logic, let’s begin examining real-life claims about “common creationist fallacies.”

Many Christians can’t see how secular geology has affected the gospel message. But the record of death (fossils) found within the rock layers we see all over the world speak directly to the wages of sin and the reason for Jesus’ work on the cross. Find out how.

A fatal weakness of creationist arguments is said to be that environments change over time. “After the changes,” this objection states, “living things are no longer adapted to the environments they were originally designed for, so their designs are no longer good. This reality doesn't fit with the idea of a competent Designer.” Is this the deathblow to creation? Let’s think about it.

"This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, 'Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.' For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly." 2 Peter 3:1-7
