The November elections are over. Some of us got the result we voted for, and some of us did not. So how should a Christian treat the neighbor with the other yard sign, the brother or sister in Christ who voted differently, and whoever now holds office? Peter answers in one verse with four commands: "Honor everyone. Love the brothers and sisters. Fear God. Honor the emperor."
We look at what it means to honor someone: to show them high regard as a person made in the image of God, which is not the same as approving of everything they do. We see that Peter gives fear to God alone, that the person in the highest office gets the same honor as the person next door, and that when a ruler commands what God forbids, we obey God. Peter wrote these commands to believers living as exiles under a Roman emperor, and none of them depends on how our ballot went.

How do God’s people live while they wait for God to keep His promise? The prophet Habakkuk asked God, “How long?” Then he stood at his guard post and waited for God’s answer. God told him to write the answer down: the vision will not lie, and the appointed time is God’s to set. “The righteous will live by his faith.”
Centuries later, Paul quoted that same line in Romans 1:17 to show how a sinner is counted righteous before God: by faith alone, in Christ alone. On Reformation Sunday we look at how God used that verse to change Martin Luther, and why it is still good news for us.
