Antonio S is a boy who knows all sorts of things. Scarrabo the Magnificent is a magician. Professor Kettering is a doctor. They live together at the top of a grand old house built long ago for a duke. But who is Theodore Guzman, the secretive old man who lives downstairs? What mysterious things does he know? It takes someone like Antonio S to find out.
Odo Hirsch has written a wonderfully warm and eccentric story about a boy who explores a secret passage that leads to the very heart of the house where the magical world of Theodore Guzman comes to life.
Critic Reviews:
"A quirky and eccentric oasis of imagination in a sea of issue and action-led reading." (The Age)

Good family listening
Our family, with children ages 2 to 12, likes to pass the time on long trips listening to audio books. Finding one suitable and interesting for everyone can be a challenge at times, but this story certainly worked for us. It is a celebration of the creative process, especially drama. Although the father is a magician, there is nothing "spooky" or evil or scary. The author makes it clear that his illusions are tricks requiring timing and practice. And although the title and synopsis on the cover stress the "mystery", it is much more about daily life and human relationships. It is refreshing to have the main character, a boy, come from a stable, loving home. SPOILER WARNING: a main character does die near the end, but it is handled very matter of factly. It did not worry my sensitive 5 year old.
It's important for an adult reading to a child to also like a book
My adult son: "Antonio S is a rather special book. We all like it and it really is something out of the ordinary."
... later comment: "We still have no idea where the 'Theodore Guzman' story is headed, which is unusual for a kids' book."
"We": my son is reading it aloud to his own son (10) and daughter (8.)
