Social media blackmail occurs when someone threatens to expose private information, pictures, videos, or conversations unless the victim sends money, provides more content, meets in person, stays silent, or obeys another demand.

These are serious threats—not jokes.

WHAT TO DO

1. Do not pay, send more content, share your password, or agree to meet.
2. Stop communicating. Do not threaten the person back.
3. Preserve messages, usernames, links, phone numbers, payment demands, dates, and times.
4. Never forward private or sexual images, especially those involving anyone under 18.
5. Report the account to the platform, then block it.
6. Tell a parent, guardian, school official, police officer, or trusted adult immediately.
7. Report threats, stalking, extortion, exploitation, or safety concerns to law enforcement.

YOUNG PEOPLE

You are not alone, and you should not be ashamed. One mistake does not mean your life is over. The blackmailer is responsible. Speak up and get help.

LAW ENFORCEMENT, THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY & MOTHERS AGAINST BULLYING Working Together to Protect Our Children

Bullying is not simply “kids being kids.” It can damage a child’s confidence, education, emotional health, relationships, and sense of safety.

According to the CDC’s 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 19.2% of U.S. high school students reported being bullied on school property during the previous 12 months. Another 16.3% reported being electronically bullied through texting, social media, or other digital platforms.

The National Center for Education Statistics reported that approximately 19% of students ages 12–18 experienced bullying during school in the 2021–22 school year. That is nearly one out of every five students.

Not every bullying incident is a crime, but bullying may cross the line into criminal conduct when it involves physical assault, credible threats, stalking, extortion, weapons, sexual exploitation, or other dangerous behavior.

Everyone has an important role:

SCHOOLS must protect students, investigate reports, document incidents, communicate with families, enforce policies, and establish safety plans.

LAW ENFORCEMENT and School Resource Officers respond to emergencies and investigate conduct that may violate the law.

THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY reviews the evidence provided by law enforcement and determines whether criminal charges are supported by the facts and the law.

MOTHERS AGAINST BULLYING works through education, prevention, family support, community awareness, and safe reporting.

Mothers Against Bullying is willing and ready to assist in educating our children about bullying and everything that goes along with it. Our children must understand what bullying is, how to recognize warning signs, how to report incidents, how to save evidence, and how to seek help safely.

If your child reports bullying:

• Listen carefully and do not blame the child.
• Document dates, locations, names, witnesses, and injuries.
• Save screenshots, messages, photographs, videos, and emails.
• Report the incident to the school in writing.
