🎙️ Opening Statement
“Know. Demand. Protect. That’s the Parent’s Right Corner. If you don’t know, you can’t demand. If you don’t demand, your child won’t be protected. Let’s get into it.”
Segment 1 – Setting the Scene (1–2 min)
Host (Ray Walton):
“Welcome, parents, guardians, and community members. Today on Parents’ Corner, we’re talking about what you need to do the minute your child reports being bullied — whether they tell you directly as the parent, or they report it to a school administrator, teacher, counselor, office staff, principal, vice principal, yard duty staff, or even if someone comes to you or the staff anonymously and says they saw someone being bullied.
This is not the time to wait, hope it gets better, or tell them to ‘toughen up.’ Bullying can escalate quickly, and as parents, we are the first line of defense.”
Segment 2 – Step-by-Step Response (4–5 min)
Step 1: Listen Without Judgment
“When your child says they’ve been bullied, stop everything and listen. Give them your full attention. Don’t interrupt. Don’t downplay.
Your reaction sets the tone for whether they’ll come to you again.”
Step 2: Document Immediately
“Write down every detail — date, time, location, names, what happened, and how it made your child feel. This record will be critical when you speak to the school.”
Step 3: Contact the School – Victim First
“Reach out to the principal or designated school official immediately.
Important: Under best practice, the school should contact the bullied child’s parents before contacting the alleged bully’s parents.”
Step 4: Ask About Safety Measures
“Ask the school:
• How will you keep my child safe during and after the investigation?
• Who will my child check in with daily?
• How will you prevent retaliation?”
Step 5: Follow Up
“Don’t assume silence means the problem is solved. Follow up with the school in writing and check in with your child daily.”
Segment 3 – Legal & Emotional Support (2–3 min)
“California law — Ed Code § 234.1 — requires schools to intervene, protect, and prevent retaliation. They must keep your child’s identity confidential.
If the school fails to act, you have the right to file a complaint with the district and, if needed, escalate to the California Department of Education.”
Segment 4 – Quick Action Steps for Parents (1 min)
3 things you can do today:
1. Know your district’s bullying policy — ask for it in writing.
2. Keep all bullying reports in a folder — every email, note, or meeting.
3. Make sure your child knows who they can go to at school if something happens again.
Segment 5 – Resources & Closing (1 min)
“Remember — your child’s safety is your top priority, and you are not alone in this.
Here are your key resources:
• 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (Call or Text)
• Crisis Text Line – Text “HOME” to 741741
