I sit down with Dr. Claudia Mejia, a licensed psychologist in Las Vegas, NV to dissect the first episode of the series from a psychological perspective. We also discuss the impact Selena had on many first generation Latinx, the influence of growing up biculturally, cultural factors such as familismo, low socioeconomic status (or Low SES), and issues related to bilingualism.

Dr. Sandra Gray, PhD is a bilingual licensed psychologist in Las Vegas, NV, where she owns a group practice, Innovation Behavioral Health Solutions, LLC. Dr. Gray specializes in trauma, working with first gen BIPOC professionals, working with immigrant populations through immigration evaluations, and the psychological and neuropsychological assessment of conditions such autism, ADHD, learning disorders, among other conditions. Dr. Gray has been in the mental health field for 12 years and is the founder of Borrando El Estigma and Empower LV, a nonprofit that focuses on increasing equity and creating access to services including mental health services, academic tutoring, and quality sports programs. Dr. Claudia Mejia is a Licensed psychologist in Las Vegas, NV. Dr. Mejia is a bilingual-bicultural (Spanish-English) licensed psychologist in Nevada and currently the Director of Social and Behavioral Health Services at Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada, where she provides direct clinical services to patients, develops behavioral health and social service programming, and supervises graduate psychology and mental health counseling trainees. She also works with other local non-profits as a provider, consultant, and board member. Dr. Mejia is a Chicago-born Mexican American first-generation Latina. She has lived and worked in predominantly Latinx areas of the US (including Miami and San Antonio) and is currently based in Las Vegas where she focuses on working with immigrant populations, first-gen folx, and low-income communities, attempting to decrease stigma associated with mental health and help-seeking, and aims to increase access to behavioral health by attempting to decolonize Western approaches.
