Zombie Development – Stories from the Konkan Coast: Welcome to the Konkan coast along India’s central western seaboard, where mangoes and cashews are farmed, where shrimp, pomfret, mackerel, and grouper are aplenty, and where heavy-polluting industries are threatening local livelihoods and ecologies of local fishing and farming communities. These are projects that local stakeholders have fought against on the streets and in the courts for decades now, and they have won significant gains for local sovereignty and environmental protection. But these once dead projects are now being resurrected like zombies, by politicians who are putting profits over people. In this episode, guest producer Anuj Vaidya speaks to activist and educator Bhushan Bhoir about the the Wadhwan Port in Palghar which promises to be the largest container port in Asia, and to Neha Rane about the West Coast Refinery in Ratnagiri which, at the cost of Rs. 3 trillion crores, is the most expensive project being undertaken by the current government.
