  • Clashes, fires and looting break out as protesters rally across France

About 400 people were arrested nationwide, interior minister Laurent Nunez said.

Mr Nunez said 110 marches drew about 550,000 people across the country.

Organisers, including the CGT labour union and students’ organisations, said about 800,000 demonstrators took to the streets.

Mr Nunez described troublemakers as “extremely violent, radical far-left groups” whom, he said, sought confrontations with police and targeted public buildings, including city halls and local government offices.

He said those groups have been joined by offenders willing to loot shops.

Most of those arrested are adults, he said.

Some incidents were still ongoing in central Paris on Saturday evening.

  • Rare pink diamond goes on display in France 100 years after amateur heist

A rare pink diamond is going on display in France for the first time since it was stolen almost 100 years ago to the day - the last time it was shown to the public.

The nine-carat, pear-shaped gemstone known as the "Grand Condé" was pilfered in an overnight raid on the Château de Chantilly in October 1926 and concealed in a hollowed-out apple.

The diamond - one of few royal jewels to survive the French Revolution - was recovered a few weeks later when a hungry maid at the hotel in which the thieves were staying took a bite of the apple.

It will once again be on display in the Condé Museum at the Château de Chantilly until 3 January.

The museum's director Mathieu Deldicque said that while the apple story may sounds far-fetched, it was widely covered by newspapers at the time.

Deldicque has faced questions about whether the exhibition may be tempting fate, especially given the string of heists on European cultural institutions in the past 12 months, including the daring daylight robbery of jewellery from the Louvre museum in Paris.

While he declined to reveal to CNN how much the diamond was insured for, he noted that extensive academic study into the properties of the diamond had taken place to make it uniquely identifiable.

  • Nursery owner in China jailed for life after hundreds of children poisoned

A nursery owner and five members of her staff have been jailed after they were found to have poisoned more than 200 children with lead-tainted food.

Li Huifang, who operated the Heshi Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui, in the Gansu province, was sentenced to life in prison for producing and selling toxic and harmful food, according to Chinese state media.

In July 2025, 247 pupils and staff at the nursery were found to have abnormally high blood lead levels after children began falling ill.

A report into the incident found that chefs at Heshi Peixin had used inedible paint to "enhance the look" of its meals to attract more students - despite the paint being being clearly marked as such.

In addition to the sentence, the Lanzhou Intermediate People's Court also ordered the confiscation of 500,000 yuan (£56,200; $74,700) of Li's personal assets, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Nursery executive principal Zhi Jinglin was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined 300,00 yuan.

Four other members of staff who worked in the nursery's kitchen received sentences of between six to eight years, according to state media.

The court found the four had been instructed by Li and Zhi to add toxic and harmful ingredients to food served to children and staff.

  • Trump Rules Out Nuclear Option Against Iran, Addresses Possibility of Ground Invasion

US President Donald Trump has ruled out using nuclear weapons against Iran, saying the United States does not need to resort to them. In a recent interview with Newsmax, Trump also discussed the possibility of further military action, including strikes against a suspected underground nuclear facility known as Pickaxe Mountain. He said he did not believe US ground troops would be necessary in Iran.

The remarks come amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran and renewed discussion of potential US military options. While Trump rejected the use of nuclear weapons, questions remain over the scope of possible conventional strikes and the future direction of the conflict.

  • Tesla Reveals Next-Generation Roadster Featuring SpaceX Thrusters and ‘Flying’ Capabilities

Tesla has unveiled its long-awaited next-generation Roadster, featuring SpaceX-developed thruster technology that allows the vehicle to perform dramatic aerial maneuvers. During a demonstration in Texas, the electric sports car was shown lifting off the ground and moving through the air, bringing Elon Musk’s long-promoted vision of a rocket-assisted car closer to reality.

Tesla says production is planned for 2028, nearly nine years after the next-generation Roadster was first revealed. However, questions remain about pricing, public-road legality, and whether the experimental flight capabilities will translate into a practical vehicle for everyday drivers.

The unveiling highlights the collaboration between Tesla’s automotive technology and SpaceX’s aerospace engineering, although the car’s eventual availability and real-world capabilities remain to be seen.

  • Meta Bets on Smarter AI to Boost Engagement and Supercharge Advertising Revenue

Meta is gaining renewed investor attention as its Muse AI agent and new flagship models, Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, strengthen its position in the artificial intelligence market. Beyond developing AI technology, the company has a major advantage: its established advertising business.

According to Yahoo Finance, more capable AI models could improve content recommendations, ad targeting, and campaign performance across Meta’s platforms. Better results for advertisers could encourage increased spending, helping Meta generate revenue while funding its substantial AI investments.

However, challenges remain. The long-term success of Muse is still uncertain, infrastructure costs could continue to rise, and competitors such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are developing their own AI offerings. The key question is whether Meta can turn its AI progress into sustainable growth while maintaining the strength of its advertising business.

  • Google Expands News AI Partnerships to Over 400 Media Outlets, With CNN Among New Paid Participants

Google announced on October 15 that its News AI pilot program has expanded to more than 400 participating media outlets worldwide. CNN, the Financial Times, Forbes, and Axios are among the newly reported participants. Under these partnerships, publishers provide Google with expanded rights to use their content for AI-powered features, including article summaries and audio briefings. The financial terms of the agreements have not been disclosed.

The initiative comes as news organizations explore licensing deals with AI companies while also pursuing legal action over the use of copyrighted material. These efforts reflect publishers’ concerns about declining search-driven traffic and their attempts to develop new sources of revenue from their journalism.
