  • #312 JAMES SULLIVAN, MUSICIAN
JAMES SULLIVAN – frontman and guitar player of London’s garage-pop trio MORE KICKS and apocalypse-pop supergroup SUSPECT PARTS has just released his debut solo album LIGHT YEARS.  In November 2020, after repeated album delays and touring cancellations due to the pandemic, Sullivan found himself stuck at home writing LIGHT YEARS  as a self-imposed distraction. “In that car crash of a year, November seemed to hit particularly hard. I decided to set myself the challenge of writing one song every day for 10 days and then record them all myself in my little analog setup at home in North London,” says Sullivan. “LIGHT YEARS was a move away from writing songs for a live band. Trying out new styles and not thinking about anything for longer than a few minutes. Pure instinct only.” Accompanying the new album is Sullivan’s video for the single Lea Bridge. The song’s motorik rhythm propels Sullivan’s stream of consciousness vocal style that is reminiscent of Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker. The lyrics describe a journey across London back home from an area called Lea Bridge on a crappy red bike. Sullivan says, “So I took the same crappy red bike, taped my phone to the handlebars and rode that journey again. When I looked at what I'd 'filmed', the footage was insanely shaky but weirdly compelling. So, much like the recording process, I made a virtue of its weirdness, messed with it a bit to add some VHS distortion, sped it up and reversed it. It was odd how well it synced up with the song.”

  • #310 Clint Westwood
Clint Westwood releases a fresh take on one of his singles and some other quarantine musical gems on Mannequin Vanity Records  -- “Return to the Mothership” is coming out on August 27th.
We are pleased to announce that Clint Westwood had emerged from the vaults of quarantine with some old tunes re-imagined and re-recorded for this strange new world. "Return to the Mothership" EP comes alongside a music video/trailer (that premiered on Spill Magazine on August 18th  https://spillmagazine.com/59623) for an up-and-coming short film about his cosmic crash landing onto a bizarre hostile planet and one brave UFO tow-truck drivers' heroic journey to get him back home. We may be lost in space, but we are not alone in the universe and existential dread has never sounded so catchy. Don't forget to book your one-way ticket back to the Mothership and get the hell out of Cult Country before we all go back to that great dumpster fire in the sky! Clint Westwood is a veteran performer, songwriter, and recording artist best known for his role as the booze-soaked bass smashing, banjo bashing co-frontman of the pirate gypsy ska band Whiskey Avengers. With a few solo records under his belt, he is now unleashing his self-branded ‘Cult Country’ style onto barflies, hussies, hipsters, and rug-cutters around the world. It’s a hodgepodge of authentic American roots music with a southwestern edge littered with literary lyrical prose that will leave you stomping, swashbuckling, and laughing maniacally while punching holes in the wall. Clint Westwood is what happens when punk rock grows a beard and grabs a banjo but doesn’t grow up. Many musical projects have taken him across the ponds to Europe and Japan as well as many journeys around the United States. He’s seen some shit and is not afraid to tell it like it is, and it isn’t looking good, so might as well have a good time and sing along with your new favorite April Fool. Welcome to Cult Country.

  • #309 Karl Hensel of “Desperate Acts”
Desperate Acts emerges as a fresh band with confident, passionate, yet gritty melodies.Their debut album, coming out September 10th on SBÄM (Worldwide) and Kings Road (US) titled 'State Secrets' is a call to start paying closer attention beyond your own backyard.  Singer Matt Keil explained, “I think the recurring theme is being aware of constant, abject horror in the world and how to be part of a positive change versus being focused on very small daily challenges and issues that are not really that important. The song 'Drying Out' is a nod to all of the ways we waste our time when there are bigger problems to fix, there’s darkness present in the song, but it’s never over-dramatic and there’s a clear undercurrent of hope and perseverance.
State Secrets was originally meant to be tracked in Boston with producer Jay Maas at Getaway Recording. His resume includes everything from Bane and Defeater to Citizen and Title Fight (and Jennifer Rostock). To navigate the 2020 lockdowns, it was instead tracked with Brian Herb at Mother of All Music in St. Paul, Minnesota after pre-production was done virtually with Jay over a few months. Brian is normally touring doing tech and sound work for Alice in Chains and Jerry Cantrell and his resume includes everything from Helmet to Bush with a long list of live and studio recording credits. Jay collaborated with Brian to get the mixing and mastering done. Drummer Karl Hensel recalled, “I wouldn’t recommend doing demos recorded on Iphones, communicating about songs via youtube and Facetime, then recording one person at a time with another engineer in the midst of a pandemic, after writing music together and navigating quarantine safely throughout.  However, if we had recorded when we booked time with Jay, six of these songs wouldn’t have made the record.  We made the most of the longer, slower process.  It’s weird to say it now, but I know I needed the distraction and we have a better record because of it.”

  • #305 Dany Laj
Dany Laj and the Looks have released their hotly anticipated third full-length album “Ten Easy Pieces” via We Are Busy Bodies Records. Soaked in enough song writing craft and melody to make even Brian Wilson blush, Dany Laj and the Looks have produced a genre straddling album sure to please even the most discerning of music listeners.
Sidekicks Dany Laj and Jeanette Dowling are known for their extensive touring schedules and electrifying live shows.  Impressively, the band have played over 1000 shows all through North America. "It's crazy to think of it now but we've been all over the place on the continent, I haven't even been on a plane yet and apparently there's a whole different world out there," Laj smirks.
The narrative weaved together by Laj’s powerful, yet unpretentious lyrics tells the tale of the Northern Ontario kid trying to find his way south, ultimately to Montreal, by way of Sudbury, North Bay, Toronto, and everywhere in between. With stories of finding love, cross-country tours, and broken-down vehicles, this album ultimately retains a strong sense of humour and hope, which lies within memorably catchy hooks and intertwining harmonies between Laj and bassist Jeanette Dowling. Dowling and drummer Dusty Campbell as The Looks, Laj’s crack rhythm section, provide a rock-solid foundation and perfect complement to Laj’s quirky pop sensibilities, rendering Dany Laj and the Looks an unstoppable force just

  • #304 dwi
Vancouver music scene veteran and bass player for The Zolas, dwi has just released his debut single and video for “Freak N Out”. This is the first offering from dwi’s upcoming EP, set for release in September on Light Organ Records.
The video for “Freak N Out” takes the listener through a psychedelic dreamscape where dwi snakes through pockets of dark and light, rain and shine, and even dances with a life-size teddy bear. The hypnotizing beats hint of 90s Brit Pop, together with some spacy grooves, sunset hues, and a bit of Bowie’s bubble gum. Fans of Mac DeMarco, Real Estate, and indie legends the Sea and Cake will jump on dwi’s open vocals and chill synth sounds. The songs are personal yet familiar, soothing to the ear, and full of summer hope.
dwi’s deeply personal solo project was born out of the isolation that ensued as a result of the 2020 global pandemic. dwi used the time to create something new, exciting, and introspective. The breezy songs are reflective in nature, and touch on a range of topics including childhood, environmentalism, addiction, and the political landscape of the world. Obvious nods to musical heroes such as The Beatles, Damon Albarn, and The Cure are heard throughout. dwi’s melodic indie pop is your new, lazy, summer jam.
