  • #393 Stan Simon
With over 50,000 streams and a reputation for vivid, emotionally honest songwriting, Toronto-based folk artist Stan Simon returns with Narrow Bridge, a new EP set for release on July 9, 2025, through Slammin’ Media, distributed worldwide by Believe. Rooted in contemporary folk traditions and laced with elements of country and Americana, the EP weaves together themes of climate urgency, personal loss, and quiet resilience. Its title track (out June 4) leads the project with a tone that’s both defiant and hopeful, offering a powerful invitation to “cross that narrow bridge” toward awareness, accountability, and renewal. “It’s a passionate environmental and social call to action,” Simon says. “I wanted to write something that captures both the anger and the hope I feel about what’s happening in the world. About how we treat nature, each other, and ourselves.”
Written and recorded with longtime producer Dennis Patterson at Big Smoke Audio, Narrow Bridge takes a layered approach to reckoning. The vivid natural imagery in its title track (bleeding oceans, burning forests, mass extinction) is underscored by Simon’s frustration with “greenwashing” and political indifference. And yet, beneath the urgency lies a steady, unshaken belief in collective transformation. “We’re not beyond saving,” he adds. “The song is a reminder that renewal is possible, but only if we step into discomfort and choose to act.” That spirit of resolve and reflection runs through the entire EP, which Simon describes as “an invitation to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with the natural world, and with the deeper truths we all carry.”
Alongside its global outlook, Narrow Bridge offers unflinching personal moments, including the grief-stricken ballad “Long Way Past Gone,” written shortly before the passing of Simon’s father. “This song took on new meaning after he died,” Simon explains. “It’s about feeling far beyond the point of return. There’s numbness, resignation, and the sense of being broken in ways that can’t be fixed.” Using imagery like a cardinal’s song (often seen as a spiritual sign) Simon threads together mourning and metaphysical longing, evoking the empty quiet of spiritual collapse with poetic, weary precision. “I wanted to paint a picture of someone who is emotionally disconnected from life,” he says, “but also still reaching for meaning through the fog.”

  • #392 Gail & Madeline Bury of the Prison Family Podcast
Born from a sense of discouragement that policies related to incarceration are slow to change and a recognition that a significant portion of the general public is unaware of the larger societal impacts that occur when someone is incarcerated – the harms to family and social circles, to children and to future generations.
What's it like to find out that someone you love has committed a crime, has hurt someone?  Not top of mind thinking for most people, unless you are a prison family member.  If you are, those thoughts intrude on pretty much every waking moment.  People that we love have harmed someone else.  That hurts.  They have also harmed us, emotionally, financially, sometimes physically.
This series explores the impacts of incarceration on secondary victims - family members - who are innocent of any crime but are often victimized by the system that exists to punish the crime they didn't commit.
This podcast discusses the initial shock experienced by families when a loved one is incarcerated, in the true voices of family members.  It explores topics such as fear, shock, bias, loss, hope, hopelessness, security and lack of it.  Issues are explored more broadly with a number of subject matter experts.
MOMS Ottawa has been advocating for a more humane prison system for over a decade, in addition to support for female family members of incarcerated loved ones.  Pros and Cons Program helps create music in prisons to support healing, restorative justice, victim support, and education.

Carmen Toth is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter known for her hook-driven power pop, heartfelt storytelling, and retro-influenced sound. Drawing inspiration from artists like Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, and Sheryl Crow, her music blends vulnerability with classic pop-rock grit.
Over the past two decades, Toth has evolved from solo acoustic sets and her early duo Social Potion into a fully realized indie artist, performing in both band and solo formats and building a loyal following through regular livestreaming. Her 2018 EP Safety Net, produced by Derek Downham, marked a shift toward a modern pop sensibility.
In 2020, Toth began work on her most ambitious project to date - Fix the World, an 11-song album co-produced with Joel Wasson and John Critchley (13 Engines). Featuring performances from members of The Discarded, Lowest of the Low, and Ace of Wands, the album captures Carmen’s growth as a guitarist and vocalist and cements her identity as a powerful voice in Canada’s indie rock and pop landscape.

  • #390 JESSICA, CHAD & OSCAR from GOMER
Gomer is a Toronto-based power punk band born during the 2020 pandemic. What started as a demo-swapping project grew into a full-force collaboration, with the lineup solidifying in 2024: Michael Hawco (bass), Chad Kerswill (vocals), Oscar Laguan (guitar), Jessica Fleming (guitar), and Andrew McMullen (drums). Their debut release, The Age of Gomer (2022), laid the foundation for their storytelling. But the band has since pushed their sound, energy, and songwriting further than ever. At the heart of Gomer is a character who embodies struggle, persistence, and the demand to be heard in a world not built for them. That hero is flawed but relatable, someone who continues to fight no matter the odds. Gomer’s next chapter begins with their EP The Rise of Gomer in September 2025, followed by their first full-length album Gomer Lives in early 2026. Both releases mark the band’s evolution into a sharper, louder, and more fearless force.

  • #389 Maria, Christopher & Jordan of Acapulco Lips
Seattle’s Acapulco Lips return with Now, a full-length burst of fuzz, flair, and sun-scorched swagger, out July 14 digitally and July 18 on vinyl via Killroom Records. Their signature cocktail of psych, surf, and garage rock gets a sparkling refresh on this latest release, with thicker grooves, sharper hooks, and even more attitude. For over a decade, the band has been a staple of the Pacific Northwest underground, blending '60s girl group charm with blown-out guitar licks and reverb-drenched abandon. Now doesn’t mellow with age. It snarls with intent, while reaching into deeper emotional terrain than ever before.
From the woozy swirl of “Fuzzy Sunshine” to the frantic pulse of “The Flim-Flam,” the album crackles with restless energy and reckless cool. Maria-Elena Herrell’s vocals remain the radiant centerpiece, equal parts haunting and honeyed, while her basslines hold down the chaos with a melodic strut. Guitarist Christopher Garland lets loose in all directions, adding a tanpura drone here, a wild tremolo run there. Jordan T Adams joins on drums and percussion, bringing punch and personality, while Stefan Rubicz’s keys offer occasional glimmers of retro shimmer.
But beneath all the shimmer and fuzz lies a quiet meditation on time — how we lose it, spend it, waste it, and sometimes try to outrun it. “I’d say pretty much every single song on Now goes back to the theme of time,” says Herrell. “There’s an urgency that comes with understanding you can’t get it back, and you don’t know how much you’ll get.” That urgency pulses through tracks like “Everyday,” a frustrated observation of history repeating itself, and “Slowly Disappearing,” a slow-burning elegy for fading places and people. Written in part after seeing photos of the now-abandoned hospital where she was born, the song captures a feeling of slow erosion — of personal and collective memory — with a gentleness that suggests deeper loss. “It can feel like you are disappearing along with them,” she says.

  • #388 Matt Collyer of the Planet Smashers
The Planet Smashers return with “Things You Do,” the second single from their upcoming album On the Dancefloor, out August 22 on Stomp Records. Dropping August 8 alongside a new video, the track delivers everything fans have come to expect: big hooks, sharp horns, and the kind of bounce that turns a casual listen into a full-body groove. With a walking ska bassline that moves, drives, and shakes beneath melodic guitar chops and tight brass hits, “Things You Do” is a lean and memorable slice of ska punk at its best.
It’s one of the album’s catchiest cuts, channeling everything the Smashers have honed over the years into a punchy three-minute blast. The track is tight, upbeat, and unpretentious, the kind of thing that hits hardest when played loud. Like much of On the Dancefloor, it was written with the band’s famously wild live shows in mind: sweaty, horn-laced, and full of dancing bodies from the first note to the last.
Now three decades deep, The Planet Smashers show no signs of letting up. Since forming in Montreal in 1994, they’ve remained one of the most enduring and beloved acts in the global ska-punk scene. With over 30 million streams, hundreds of thousands of video views, and a touring history that spans North America, Europe, and Japan, the band has weathered every wave of the genre by sticking to what they do best. Founding frontman Matt Collyer also co-founded Stomp Records, helping build a platform for countless Canadian alt and punk acts along the way.

  • #386 Steve Lewin of Beta Trip
Beta Trip, the new project from Toronto multi-instrumentalist Steve Lewin, announces his debut full-length album Superette, out September 26 on Having Fun, the rock imprint of We Are Busy Bodies. The first advance single, “Juliet,” lands June 13 and offers a high-energy introduction to Lewin’s matured sonic vision. Melodic, emotionally resonant, and firmly rooted in the atmospherics of Britpop and the grit of 90s alternative rock, “Juliet” kicks off a ten-track journey that bridges nostalgic textures with fresh perspective. It marks Lewin’s return to his roots under the Beta Trip moniker, drawing influence from Elbow, Radiohead, and Pearl Jam.
“Juliet” is a hook-heavy, propulsive alt-pop song that examines misguidance, both in others and in oneself, while leaning into themes of growth, perspective, and closure. With layered guitars, rich harmonies, and a melodic sensibility that balances grit and shimmer, the track brings a catchy collision of melody and drive. Though it carries the appearance of simplicity, “Juliet” was crafted over many years, performed for audiences across the world in varied ideations, but never recorded, until now. It finally came together amidst the reflection and recalibration that sparked Beta Trip, and in doing so, not only found its way onto Superette, but easily claimed itself as the lead single. The result sets the tone for an album that fuses introspection with anthemic energy.

  • #385 Sonny Vincent of Testors
Green Noise Records is proud to present Prime Primitive: 1976–1977, a vital archival release from legendary New York City punk band Testors, available May 30, 2025. Capturing the essence of the band’s earliest studio and live recordings, this LP offers a long-overdue look at one of the rawest and most uncompromising acts to emerge from the original NYC punk underground. Founded by Sonny Vincent in 1975, Testors took shape in the grimy backrooms and sweat-soaked stages of Max’s Kansas City and CBGB—two epicenters of the East Village scene that gave rise to the Ramones, Richard Hell, the Heartbreakers, and Television. Testors stayed firmly committed to the fire and fury of pure rock’n’roll, leaving behind a trail of scorched earth and unforgettable shows—including a tour with the Dead Boys that spread their chaotic energy nationwide. Far from lacking recorded material, Testors had a wealth of songs and studio sessions, but due to their fiery temperament and their desire to burn every bridge in sight they simply rejected the compromises demanded by record companies. Their often violent, stripped-down sound helped shape the American punk blueprint that thousands of bands would follow.
Testors erupted on the New York scene at the epicenter of the punk rock explosion. Absolutely one of the best raw, catastrophic, and shocking bands to ever grace the stages of Max's Kansas City and CBGB’s during the mid-70's punk heyday, Their incendiary sound consisted of dueling guitar noise and Sonny Vincent's street poetry. Testors created music that stands the test of time. Painfully delicate, unabashed, unrepentant, explosive, and savagely persuasive. Their earliest recordings are considerably tougher, louder and more desperate than any other music made at that time (or since) and after you let it latch onto your soul, you're forever indebted to New York's toughest, rawest, REALest punk band for the rest of your fucking life. It’s a crime against history that the Testors never got their due: a band like this could and should have changed everything.
Prime Primitive captures Testors the way they were meant to be heard—on vinyl, no CDs, no digital downloads, no AI. Just the real-deal slab,  in an exclusive silver foil jacket for true believers to have and to hold. Adding to the celebration, a newly unearthed video titled Testors – 1979—featuring rare 16mm footage of the band and candid backstage moments with Testors, the Dead Boys, and Johnny Thunders at Irving Plaza—will be available via the Green Noise Records YouTube channel. Directed and edited by Robert Luttrell, with words and music by Sonny Vincent, the video offers a raw visual snapshot of an era that refuses to fade.
Prime Primitive is a sonic time capsule of Testors at their most volatile and vital. Side A compiles nine of their early studio recordings from 1976–77—taut, feral tracks that hiss with desperation and attitude—while Side B delivers five ferocious live cuts that find the band tearing through their set with unhinged intensity. All tracks were newly remastered for this release by Timothy Stollenwerk (Stereophonic Mastering) in close collaboration with Sonny Vincent, ensuring maximum punch, grit, and clarity. Every song was written, arranged, and produced by Vincent, whose compositions and streetwise lyrics remain as bracing now as they were nearly fifty years ago. These aren’t just recordings—they're artifacts of a cultural explosion, finally given the fidelity and sequencing they always deserved.

  • #384 Dainéal Parker of Lone Kodiak
Founded by Portland natives Dainéal Parker (vocals, guitars) and Daniel Alden (bass), the group found revelation with the inclusion of their drummer, Josh Harris. Drawing inspiration from iconic bands like The Cure, Hum, The Smashing Pumpkins, Explosions In The Sky, and Deftones, the group embarked on a creative journey during the pandemic, molding a distinct sonic identity that has marked them out as the next new act to watch.
Whether trying to nail down their sound or find another group as hardworking as them, the band stands alone as their namesake would against a barren backdrop. And, of course, the East LA outfit doesn’t fit in with the pomp and bluster of the Hollywood rock scene, unconcerned as they are with clout, glory, or grandeur.
The quartet (with guitarist Ben Palmer squaring the circle) combines the grit of East LA with the sublime wildness of the Pacific Northwest – a group that is at once solitary, capable, dangerous, and self-assured
The band spent the pandemic crafting and honing their sound to a polish during the years of lockdowns and unrest the pandemic brought. What that is, or what to call it, is, again, not easy. “Grunge Renaissance”? “Post-Alt Rock?” Trying to classify them according to genre might earn the vague moniker of “alt-rock” or as far afield as “post-rock.”
Instead, their sound might be best captured by Parker’s vision for his lyrics. “I’ve always been fascinated with scale, majesty, immensity,” he muses. “I imagine my own death would ideally either being lost at sea or in the forest.” Look no further than the band’s name for a prime example: “Lone Kodiak” evokes the grand intimacy of a powerful animal lumbering through a vast, unforgiving wilderness.
On an endless landscape, one can’t help but feel like everything is infinitely far away, and yet feels close enough to touch, looming distantly right in front of our eyes.
