Apology (ft Konstantinos Kavakiotis)

Listen Later

Hello, and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!

Hello, my name is Konstantinos Kavakiotis and I will be your host for today as Emmanuela wasn’t able to record this week.

Από (apo)  is a preposition and it means ‘from’. Λόγος (logos) means ‘speech’. The combination of the two is a word that means speaking from within. From (and for) your side of things. Your point of view. When Plato wrote about the trial of Socrates, he named it after the philosopher’s self-defence speech; and up until the Elizabethan era, the word was used in the judicial system to mean exactly that.  Then Shakespeare came along and wrote in Ricard the third ‘ My lord there needs no such apologie’ and that’s the first time ever, the word was used to mean ‘I’m sorry’.
