  • The Church Death Could Not Stop Acts 20:1–12

Paul traveled among churches facing opposition, suffering, uncertain roads, and sudden grief. Yet through every danger, the risen Christ continued strengthening, guiding, nourishing, and comforting His people.

When the believers at Troas gathered on the first day of the week around the Word and the Lord’s Table, a young man named Eutychus fell from a third-story window and was taken up dead. But death did not have the final word that night, and it will not have the final word over anyone who belongs to Jesus Christ.

Eutychus was restored to mortal life for a little while. Jesus Christ rose in glorified, indestructible life forever. The Savior who receives His people will keep them, and the Savior who keeps them will raise them on the last day.

Join us as we hear the good news that opposition cannot silence Christ’s church, grief cannot separate Christ from His people, and death cannot stop what the risen Christ has promised to complete.

  • When the Gospel Reaches Your Life Acts 19:21–41 and the Cost of a Threatened Idol

Demetrius made his living crafting gods that could not see him or save him. When Paul's preaching started emptying Ephesus of customers, one silversmith found out exactly what he loved more than Christ. I preach through Acts 19:21-41 and trace what happens when the gospel stops being a private comfort and starts pressing against the one thing someone has built their whole life around protecting. A riot breaks out in the largest theater in Asia. A crowd chants for two hours over a truth nobody will let anyone speak. And in the middle of all that noise, Christ is shown ruling quietly through the ordinary reasoning of a town clerk who never once mentions his name. Ask yourself what you've already decided is too costly for Christ to touch.

  • The Name Exalted and the Darkness Exposed Acts 19:11–20

What happens when people try to use the name of Jesus without bowing to Him as Lord?

In Ephesus, God exposed the difference between the authority of Christ and the counterfeit power of magic, superstition, and borrowed religion. The sons of Sceva tried to use Jesus as a spiritual formula. Those whom Christ truly saved brought their hidden practices into the light, confessed their sins, and burned the books that once held them in bondage.

The name of Jesus cannot be joined to darkness, but no sinner trapped in darkness is beyond the reach of His grace. Christ does not offer us another spiritual technique or a stronger power to place at our disposal. He gives us Himself.

Join Appalachian Hills Reformed Fellowship as we open Acts 19 and proclaim the crucified, risen, and reigning Christ.

“So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily” (Acts 19:20 ESV).

  • Nothing is missing in Christ Acts 19:1-10

Paul meets twelve disciples in Ephesus who had repented and believed everything John the Baptist had taught them, yet when Paul asks them a simple question, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”, their answer exposes exactly where their understanding had stopped. Acts 19:1-10 is not a story about Christians waiting on a later spiritual upgrade. It is a story about men hearing the fulfilled gospel of the risen Christ for the first time and discovering that nothing was missing.

This message walks through that encounter section by section, from the bronze basin in Exodus and the new heart promised in Ezekiel, through John’s baptism as a signpost rather than a destination, into what actually happened when these twelve men were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus and the Spirit confirmed their place among God’s new covenant people. It closes in the synagogue at Ephesus and the hall of Tyrannus, where Paul kept carrying the same Christ into the next open door even after being pushed out of the first one.

If you have ever been told that something more is needed beyond faith in Christ, or if you have quietly wondered whether your salvation is missing a second experience, this message speaks directly to that question from the text itself.

  • The Way of God more Accurately

Apollos was brilliant. He was called mighty in the Scriptures, the same word Luke uses for Moses, and only one other man in the entire book of Acts earns that description. He was fervent in spirit, eloquent, trained in Alexandria, and already teaching true things about Jesus. He was also missing something he did not know he was missing, and it took a husband and wife pulling him aside in a private conversation, not a public correction, to show him the fuller truth of the very gospel he had already begun to preach."Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus." (Acts 18:24-28, ESV)In this message we walk through what happens when real fire for God outruns full understanding of the gospel, and what a church family looks like when it loves a gifted brother enough to complete what he is missing instead of tearing him down for it. We look at why John's baptism pointed forward but could not finish the story on its own, why law and grace can never be preached apart from each other without producing either pride or despair, and why Priscilla and Aquila's quiet living room correction accomplished more than any public rebuke ever could. We trace how grace reaches a soul before that soul ever reaches back, using Lydia's opened heart in Philippi and the Corinthian believers as proof that faith itself is a gift and never a human achievement. And we close by asking where you stand in this story, whether you are Apollos before the correction, still needing someone to show you the whole truth of what Christ has already done, or Apollos after it, sitting on a full gospel you have grown afraid to share with the people across your own table. This sermon was preached at Appalachian Hills Reformed Fellowship, a young Reformed Baptist church plant currently gathering in a living room in Paintsville, Kentucky, as part of our ongoing verse by verse series through the book of Acts. • The Con in Paracon Acts 18:12-23

In this message from Acts 18:12–23, Pastor Phillip Hale examines what happened when Paul was brought before Gallio’s tribunal in Corinth and why the gospel could not be silenced.

“The Con in ParaCon” addresses a question many people are asking. What do we do with spiritual hunger, paranormal curiosity, mediums, tarot, ghost hunting, and the search for answers beyond this world?

Scripture does not tell us to mock people who are searching. It tells us that every person carries a real hunger, a longing for eternity, and a conscience that bears witness that we are accountable to the God who made us. Yet no psychic reading, crystal, séance, ritual, spirit box, or hidden spiritual experience can deal with the deepest problem of the human heart.

    Only Jesus Christ can.

He lived the life we could never live, fulfilled the law we could never keep, bore the judgment our sin deserved, died on the cross, and rose bodily from the grave on the third day. He is not one spiritual option among many. He is the risen Lord who conquered death and gives eternal life freely to all who repent and believe in Him.

This sermon also considers God’s sovereign care for His church. Gallio did not understand the gospel or defend Christianity, yet God used even his indifference to preserve Paul’s ministry and keep the mission moving. The church does not survive because the world is friendly. It survives because Christ purchased His people with His blood, and the Father will not abandon what the Son has bought.

Paul’s words still give us the right posture for an uncertain future.

  • My People were here all along Acts 18;1-11

Have you ever felt completely isolated, rejected, or exhausted by the constant pressure to prove your worth?

In this expository sermon on Acts 18 verses 1 through 11, we follow the Apostle Paul as he walks out of the intellectual pride of Athens and enters the broken streets of Corinth. We look closely at how God uses moments of deep exhaustion and cultural upheaval to display his sovereign grace and build his church.

What we cover in this message

    • The unexpected story of Aquila and Priscilla and how God uses displaced people

    • The exhausting trap of modern idols like career success, financial safety, and family approval

    • The radical difference between the heavy weight of the law and the freeing power of the gospel

    • The conversion of Crispus and how the grace of Jesus meets us in our absolute wreckage

    • The deeply comforting promise of the presence of Christ when we face our deepest fears

If you are currently walking through a difficult season of anxiety, handling a cold marriage, or feeling tired from showing up for your family, this message will remind you that the Lord carries the weight so you do not have to.

  • The God They Did Not Know, Acts 17:16-34

Paul arrives alone in Athens, the most religiously crowded city in the ancient world, and finds a civilization reaching toward the divine with everything it has and getting nothing back. In the middle of all those altars he finds one with no name on it, built to a god the city admitted it did not know, and uses it to proclaim the God who made the world, who needs nothing from anyone, who is not far from any one of us, and who proved his authority over life and death by walking out of his own grave. This message walks through the whole of Acts 17:16-34, the grief that drives Paul into the marketplace, his collision with the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers, the sermon on Mars Hill itself, and the divided response that follows when the resurrection is finally proclaimed.

  • The Word They Could Not Chase Away Acts 17:10-15

Some people have traveled a long way to shut the gospel down. They organized. They crossed city lines. They stirred up every crowd they could find. And the Word took root anyway.

This morning we open Acts 17:10-15 and walk with Paul from the chaos of Thessalonica to the synagogue doors of Berea, and what we find there is one of the most honest and searching pictures in all of Scripture of what it means to actually receive the Word of God. The Bereans were called noble not because of their bloodline but because of what they did with the truth. They listened eagerly and they went home and opened their Bibles. Every single day. They wanted to know if these things were so, and what they found on every page was a crucified and risen Messiah who had been hiding in plain sight since Genesis.

But there is a darker thread running through this passage too. The men who refused the gospel in Thessalonica did not stay home. They followed the Word to the next city because a hardened heart is never content to sit quietly in its own unbelief. It recruits. It travels. It stirs up crowds. And it still could not chase away what God had already planted.

This one is for the person who has been hurt by a church that could not be questioned. For the believer who shared the gospel and watched it harden someone they love. For the person sitting in the room who recognizes themselves not in the faithful but in the one who has been running. And for anyone who has ever wondered whether the Word still works when everything around it is chaos.

He is not behind. He is not scrambling. He was already in Berea before Paul arrived. And he is already wherever you are right now.

  • The World Turned Upside Down Acts 17:1-9

Two men walk into a city on a Roman road, open a book in a synagogue, and nothing stays the same. Three Sabbaths of faithful preaching. A harvest that breaks across every boundary. A mob that cannot stop what God has already set in motion. And an accusation that is also, without the accusers knowing it, the greatest compliment ever paid to the mission of Jesus Christ.

These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also.

What happens when the gospel lands in a room? Some hearts open. Some harden. Ordinary people pay extraordinary costs. And a King is proclaimed whose throne has no term limit and answers to no higher authority.

Join us this morning as we open Acts 17:1-9 together.

Appalachian Hills Reformed Fellowship meets in Paintsville, Kentucky. We are a church plant rooted in the ordinary means of grace, expository preaching, and the belief that the finished work of Jesus Christ is enough.

New here? You are welcome at this table. Bring your questions, your doubts, and whatever it is you are carrying. The same Word that turned Thessalonica upside down is still doing its work.
