Today’s passage is often referred to as “the woman caught in adultery,” and it depicts Jesus forgiving a woman accused of adultery, highlighting His mercy and grace. But it also points out the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders as the whole point of bringing this woman before Jesus was to trap Him in His response. NOTE: This passage's authenticity as part of John's original Gospel has been debated by scholars. Yet when all is said and done, even the textual critics who doubt that it belongs in John’s Gospel all seem to agree that it is an authentic account of a true encounter between Jesus and a woman caught in adultery.
