From this chapter forward John will show Jesus as the suffering Messiah—suffering the unbelief of His own family, the divided opinion of the crowd and the persecution of the Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem. By portraying Jesus’ rejection, John provided his first readers and us with a realistic picture of the costs of being a disciple. Those who followed did so knowingly and willingly.
