  • Mushtaq Ali Al Ansari

    Bio:

Who is Mushtaq Ali al Ansari?

This is a question that is infrequently asked, mostly because the answer is rather boring.

If asked (enough) he will tell you that after long study, he may have begun to learn the basics of a couple of martial arts, but that he has no rank that is worth mentioning.

He has been involved in Sufism for the entirety of his adult life, though being the worst of his teacher’s students, he did not receive his Ijaza (permission to teach) until 1999.

He has managed to travel extensively to some interesting places and to hang out with some remarkable people, and can be coaxed into talking about this on rare occasions.

In 2018 he was dragged kicking and screaming from a quiet retirement in order to found The Nine-Sided Circle (a no mystery school) with his partner Noor Kyle George.

It is rumored that he lives somewhere on the West Coast.

  • Amy Edelstein

Bio: Amy Edelstein, educator, author, and public speaker is a powerful communicator of ideas and beliefs that can help us transform ourselves and the culture we live in. In 2014, she founded Inner Strength Education, a non-profit organization that has empowered 15,000 Philadelphia high school students in mindfulness and systems thinking and 1,400 Philadelphia teachers in self-care strategies. Inner Strength received the coveted Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL)-recommended designation in 2018. ISE's new mobile app Inner Strength, free for all teens and developed to promote teen mental health, launched in April 2021. Amy was awarded a Philadelphia Social Innovation Award for her work in Violence Reduction and an IPPY Award for her #1 bestselling education book The Conscious Classroom. She began her own contemplative practice in 1978 and continued studying and practicing transformational tools and philosophies ever since. She is a Cornell University College Scholar and cofounder of the transformative learning platform Emergence Education. More at: www.InnerStrengthEducation.org and www.TheConsciousClassroom.com

Favorite practice these days: Sitting in fullness; writing; and cherishing the beauty and living presence of the plants, animals, rivers, ocean, rocks and sky

Books: I think everyone should read The Warmth of Other Suns Isabel Wilkerson, Men We Reaped, Jesmyn Ward.
(Right now I'm knee deep in writing summary research reports, board reports, and school district reports for the Inner Strength program so I'm not reading, but if I were, I'd be reading about the Neanderthals, finishing Caste (also by Wilkerson) and My Grandmother's Hands by Resmaa Menakhem, and something by some wild female sufi mystic that I haven't identified yet.)

Just a quick word from Lukas.

The music this week is a tribute to my cousin Chris Sener. Chris was a beautiful vibrant young man and a truely inspiring artist. This week is Chris's birthday so rather than dwelling on our loss we're celebrating his life. He is a major reason why I had to confidence to launch this podcast. I am continuously working through my insecurity about expressing myself intelligently. But we only have one life to live. Why not just go for it?

    Intro: "Ketto" - Chris Sener

Outro: "Good Day" - Chris Sener

  • Noor Kyle George

    Bio:

Noor Kyle George has been meandering a Sufi-esque path for over a decade and, along the way, somehow grew into a teacher in spite of herself when her teacher invited her to do so. She is a co-founder and co-faciliator of The Nine-Sided Circle, a mostly-virtual, no-mystery school in which the wisdoms of esoteric traditions and members’ life experiences are drawn upon in support of the pursuit of human adulthood and conscious Awakening. She co-hosts live public talks via Zoom every week -- anyone interested can join by connecting with The Nine-Sided Circle on Facebook or signing up for the NSC email list for updates. The replays are all posted on YouTube. Get in touch with her personally via Facebook or Instagram to talk about sex and gender in modern Sufism, the death(s) of “identity”, singing as an embodied spiritual practice, and/or the virtues of ice cream. (She's provisionally open to other subjects too.)

    Practice:
Currently, I'd say I'm taking renewed benefit from just remembering throughout the day to breathe well, as in breathe deeply and with good pauses after the exhale. It's easy for me to get caught up in the limited routine of pandemic life while staying at home all the time and not moving around much. Shallow breathing is part of how that manifests for me. Challenging that sneaky pattern feels good.

    Books:
Recently I finished a book in audiobook format called "To Be Honest: A Memoir" by Michael Leviton, narrated by the author. It was so educational! A guy raised to be chronically, guilelessly, brutally honest in a way that most of us can't imagine tells us all about how that's played out for him and what he's learned about himself and others through the experience. It's hilarious and painful in terms of its revealing how much we lie to one another and ourselves. Certainly relevant for those interested in deep growth work even if that's not the target audience.
I'm reading or listening to a bunch of books concurrently, but one that stands out is called "Building Thriving Resiliency: Resistance in Toxic Times" by Carla Bergman and Nick Montgomery. I'm generally kind of disillusioned/fatigued with the activist languaging used therein, but the notions of freedom, friendship, ethics, affinity, trust, and responsibility resonate hard. I'm sticking with it to see what inspirations emerge that I can incorporate into my practices and communication as a teacher and a community member.
