The bible reading today is in Ezekiel chapters 13-15.
“For my will is that there be no more (any) false vision or (ocultish) flattering divination (concerning the future) within the house of Israel.”
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭12:24‬ ‭ESV‬‬
God told the prophet that the false visions and false messages given by the false prophets must not be ignored. “Son of man, “prophesy against those prophets of Israel”...and say to those who prophesy from their “own hearts...and not Mine”: ‘Hear the word of the Lord!’ Thus says the Lord God,“Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!”
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭13:2-3‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Preach against them Ezekiel, your truthful messages will reveal the falsehoods in their oracles. Remember the preaching of Jesus to the false teachers in Jerusalem...in Matt. 23...?...
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, “hypocrites”! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. “You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭23:27, 33‬ ‭
Jesus followed his own instructions to Ezekiel. False teaching and false preaching must not be ignored. It must be exposed as lies from hell. Jesus apparently felt like the false teaching had reached a threshold that deserved the boldest and strongest rebuke.
One of the main reasons why our elders teach the gospel alongside the tenets of other world views is so that we won't ever get comfortable with philosophies and religions that preach a different gospel than Jesus. As Americans, we pride ourselves in being the open and tolerant nation. And since every citizen can believe and promote their own God as “the God”, we who believe that Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life must never be without a burden, to tell the truth that sets people free...The gospel of the death, burial, and resurrection and coming again of the Lord Jesus Christ!
Let us continue to listen to God’s description of false prophets...“Your prophets have been like jackals (foxes) among ruins, O Israel. (Like Jackals, they hide from other creatures in abandoned places for their own survival, not anyone else's...these false prophets were out to help themselves, not Israel).
These prophets were not concerned to stand in the gap for the people. And God says about them...”You have “not” gone up into the breaches, you have “not” built up a wall for the house of Israel, that it might “stand” in battle in the day of the Lord.”
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭13:4-5‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Instead, you have prophesied peace when there is no peace promised now by God. And instead of strengthening the walls and fortifying them with beams and stone and mortar, you simply decorated the walls with paint. “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against your magic bands with which you hunt the souls like birds, and I will tear them from your arms, and I will let the souls whom you hunt go free...you have disheartened (discouraged) my people with your false teaching...
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭13:20-22‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Did you hear it...? God described the false prophets as “hunters of souls”. Remember Peter’s warning to the church in 1Peter5:8?
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, firm in your faith...”
    ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:8
God reminded Ezekiel that false prophets were hunters of souls, just like he described the devil to and through the apostle Peter...the evil hunter of eternal souls.
Resist the devil and his hunters standing firm in the faith.

    August 29th
The bible reading for today is in Ezekiel 9-12.
So much of the first 24 chapters in Ezekiel's prophesy relates to God‘s judgment upon Judah and Israel as a whole. Today’s animated prophesies were given to the already exiled Judeans telling the message that the rest of Israel would soon be judged also.
The people mocked the prophesies....“We’ve heard all of this before...” So God spoke...“Ezekiel, son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are a rebellious house.”
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭12:2‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“Ezekiel, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house. Children who have had every advantage. They had the word of God, they had the priesthood, they had the sacrificial system, they had the Temple, and they have had my prophets...yet, they have deliberately ignored me.”
I wonder sometimes if God gave this prophet eyes into the New Testament. Perhaps God would have told him what he told the apostle Paul.
Such as Paul’s testimony in Romans 7...“So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God sometimes...even most of the time...in my inner being, but I see and experience in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord...He will... So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh, I serve the law of sin.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:21-25‬ ‭
Yes, the prophet was mocked...“We have listened to other prophets...and they say that our loved ones back home will be delivered...that Babylon will not go back to finish the job...”
So God spoke again...“As for you, son of man, prepare for yourself an exile’s baggage, and like the theater, pretend to go into exile.
Perhaps your countrymen in exile will understand that their loved ones back in Judah will be exiled to one day. With your “make-believe” baggage you shall go out yourself at evening in your countrymen’s sight, just like those who must go into exile. And in their sight, dig through the wall, and bring your baggage out through it like you’re trying to escape the coming captivity. And put on a blindfold that you may not see the land, picturing that not even the blind will be left out of the judgment to come.
Ezekiel, I have made you a sign for the house of Israel, whether they believe or not. And the exiles mocked the prophet still...saying...“Yahweh will never do this to His people back home...”
Now we listen again to the text...“And the prince, speaking of Judah’s coward king, Zedekiah, shall go out of Jerusalem...But “I will spread my net over him” so that he can only escape exile for a while longer...and then he shall be taken in “my snare”. And “I will later” bring him to Babylon, yet he shall not see Babylon, for he will be blinded by the enemy soldiers who tracked him to Jericho...
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭12:12-13‬ ‭
Why would God speak to his rebellious children this way? Have they not suffered enough? The real question, why have His children not repented of their hard hearts by now? Because they have not yet connected their situation with God’s glory.
Perhaps through Ezekiel, they will believe and understand now that God will have His glory whether by mercy or by justice...”
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭12:3-6‬ ‭ESV‬‬
By the way that’s the cross friends. Jesus prayed that the Father would glorify Him and that what was about to happen on Golgatha would glorify the Father.
The Father showing us mercy and grace because His son Jesus took on justice for our sins...to the Glory of God!

The bible reading today in Ezekiel 5-8.
“The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way, I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.”
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭7:27‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Ezekiel used words, heavy words to get the attention of Judah. These were words that the priest/prophet gave to Judah right before Jerusalem fell to Babylon.
Here is what is coming: Your king will mourn...Your princes will despair...Your people will not fight... but will be paralyzed with fear...so blow your trumpets to gather your fighting men, but they will not come. And this judgment upon “your calculated” sinning... it will be calculated too.
Why?... Because you have turned away from me and our covenant relationship in order to worship idols and to even encourage others to do the same. “
“Jerusalem, you honored Me back in the day...but now you have taken your gracious privileges for granted and have exchanged your freedom to worship and serve Me to a bondage of sin and guilt... for you and your nation.....I cannot let you do this any longer...I will not let you do this anymore.
And after the victory that will be total...a victory that will only be survived by a small remnant...You will “remember” you “will know” again that “I am the Lord”...not you...not your money...not your allies among the nations...You will know that I am the Lord of your salvation...to worship...to love...and to desire above all again.
Wow, what a sobering prediction through the prophet.
But it got worse...“I even I, am against you...and what is about to happen...well, you can only imagine.
Now tell me once again why God was going to take His treasured ones, His covenant people Judah, through such tribulation?
Let us “Listen” to what Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4.
“You worship what you do not know; we worship what we have experienced in our hearts...what has changed us forever...Salvation is in the one true God...Yahweh...the God of salvation for all who will believe...thus salvation’s message and Messiah is from the Jews...
    ‭‭John‬ ‭4:22‬ ‭ESV‬‬
God had chosen the sons of Jacob to be a great nation. What would make them great? A Message and a Mission.
But at this time, Israel had forgotten their message and mission. They had lost their first love for the Lord. They had lost their testimony to the rest of the world. And God called them on it through the Babylonian siege and captivity.
They didn't know the Messiah personally like I do and like you do fellow follower of Jesus. They were looking for him to come, but he had not come yet, and still, they believed. At least some did
Through our New Testaments, We've been to the cross where He died in our place. We've been to the empty tomb where He rose from the dead and later showed Himself alive for forty days. We know and experience God’s salvation, because we know Jesus.
Yet we seem to lose sight of Him and His flesh in shreds from the Roman beatings His nail-pierced hands and feet. His wounded side and His thorn pierced brow from his thorny crown. What a price for my salvation...and Jesus paid it all.
That is our Message, Christan. And our mission? Spread that good news everywhere to everyone we know and beyond.
Let us be a cheerful and determined people in Christ. Serious about our message and our mission to the rest of the world.
    Have a great day.

Our bible reading today is in Ezekiel chapters 1-4.
We will read about God’s calling of Priest Ezekiel to the office of Prophet to the whole of Israel in Babylonian exile. Ezekiel was one of hundreds of Levitical priests that were deported to Babylon from Jerusalem.
Many in the priesthood had been corrupted over several generations. That’s why God told Jeremiah to stand in the Temple court and prophesy against the evil that had slowly but surely crept into the worship practices of Judah and Israel.
But apparently, Ezekiel was one of the faithful Temple priests in Jerusalem. And he would have been among the priests singing psalms of faith and hope in the Lord as the people walked from Jerusalem to Babylon.
Oh friends, praise God for those who have answered the call of God to lead the people of God in song...songs about our God...songs of praise and thanksgiving to our God...songs that revive our faith in God again...songs that remind us that we are on this journey of faith together with a whole church of believers, a whole world of believers in Jesus who face the same struggles, trials, and sin that we do.
Thanks, James Evans, for faithfully leading our church in spiritual songs. Songs upon our lips and songs that help us speak from our hearts to each other and to our God.
A mighty whirlwind comes from the north and a dark cloud appears in the heavens. In the midst of the cloud is a dazzling brightness surrounded by flames. From inside the encircling flames, there is seen a mysterious and strange vision of four beings. Below their feet are four wheels and above their heads, a throne...upon which sits the dim form of a man issuing forth a message to the humbled Ezekiel.
So who was the main character in this scene? Without a doubt, it was God Himself.
Ezekiel saw the “likeness of the glory of God”...bright light...fire...lightning...darkness...clouds...each marking God’s power and presence in creation.
I also like Barnes Notes on this glorious vision to Ezekiel...” the ox”...the animal of sacrifice and suffering...” the lion”...the Lord of the jungle; the king of beasts...the ruler...” the eagle”...of keen eye and soaring wing...limitless imagination...” the man”...his spiritual capacity...which actuates all the rest.”
This vision given to Ezekiel finds its consummation and fulfillment in the person of Christ...the “All Powerful and Ever Present Creator”...the “Sufficient Suffering Sacrifice” for sinners...the “Lord of lords” and the “King of kings”...and Jesus is the “Strength of Eagle’s Wings” that carry us through and above the storms of life.
That is so awesome. What a picture. What a vision to and for Ezekiel two and a half thousand years ago...all the way to us. Thank You, Jesus!

The bible reading today is in Lamentations 4&5.
    Right to the text...
“How the gold has grown dim, how the pure gold is changed! The holy stones lie scattered at the head of every street. The precious sons of Zion, worth their weight in fine gold, how they are regarded as earthen pots, the work of a potter’s hands!”
    ‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭4:1-2‬ ‭ESV‬‬
The last sorrowful song of Lamentations speaks of Jerusalem...poor Jerusalem. She has lost her brilliance. Not only the walls, the city buildings, the Temple, and her treasures, but primarily the “precious sons” of Zion....worth their weight and more in fine gold to Jerusalem...but taken to Babylon, their worth is as clay pots from the earth.
The exiles in Babylon would agree to that metaphor. They were the best and the brightest in their hometown. They were greatly valued by their faith, their skills, and their place in the fabric of the Judean community. Now they are little more than gold covered in dust from the ground and ash from the fire and smoke that covered all Jerusalem. No bright and shiny value now, just dimmed and destroyed. No longer a beautiful fit for their original purposes...or so they thought.
Although gold cannot be tarnished, it can lose its shine. Think about the sons of Zion in exile and the older, feeble, and sick sons of Zion that were left in the destroyed city of David to survive or die. Each of those sons of Jacob would be tempted to feel like they were now “worthless”...worthless to God...worthless to their family...and worthless to their nation.
These sons had lost their shine, but they did not lose their fundamental significance as a chosen one of God. They did not lose their supernatural God-given purpose for the rest of their life.
“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!”
    ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭115:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart,”
    ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭119:2‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Whether the sons be in slavery in Babylon, or in the smokey streets of decimated Jerusalem, they are still the children of God. To continue to live to the glory of God, seeking Him with their whole hearts.
Yes, we have all had the shine knocked off of our “supposed glory”, whether by personal loss of our health or by the loss of family or friend in death. The shine may be dimmed, but who we are in Christ our Savior has not and will not change...from glory to glory.
One more analogy from the picture of the trampled gold and the scattered precious stones of battered Jerusalem. The gold of the Temple, ravaged by fire and crumbling walls, can even lose the shape that it was created by craftsmen to be. But it never loses its fundamental purpose.
Those gold laid vessels in the Temple would come under the great heat from the fires that engulfed the House of God. Those vessels would begin to melt and their shapes would be altered. Would they be useless now? No...not useless...but changed.
O friends, God used the heat and pressures of life's’ furnace to “change” His kids. Those in Jerusalem, those in Babylon, and those on this side of the cross, including you and me. May Jesus help us to accept the furnace from his hand that He might be better glorified in and through us going forward.
Remember the text referring to the precious stones of the Temple being scattered, separated from their God chosen environments? That made up tables, ornaments, and particular clothing worn by the priests?
The significance of that separation is realized that those stones represented the tribes of Israel. Those people living in community. Those people being divided and separated for any reason would affect the whole fellowship. No wonder David wrote the following...Ps 133
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.”
    ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭133:1-3‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Life in unity...it is good...it is calming in ways needed by us all. It is refreshing and invigorating for whatever the next journey requires.
O Lord protect the fellowship of your church around the world in the days of COVID pressures and stresses. May we fight for unity at home as well as in our missional communities and our church at large...we are still the salt and the light and our testimonies still matter for Your redemptive purposes.
    Have a great day.

The bible reading today is in Lamentations 1-3.
These poems, these songs of sorrow, are attributed to Jeremiah by most. Written during Jerusalem’s fall to the armies of Babylon.
We read descriptive words like pain, darkness, broken bones, desolations, arrows...words used in the psalms and in Job’s testimony describing sorrow, suffering, and the horrors of dying and death in warfare. Israelis in Babylonian captivity would listen to the singers and resonate with the pictures of suffering painted in the song.
Let us listen...“I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of God’s wrath; and I say, “My endurance has perished...my glory is gone...so has my hope from the Lord.””
    ‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:1, 18‬ ‭
The Judeans had never seen their great walls penetrated. “These are the “walls of God”, they would say, ”we are safe.”
And as soon as they trusted in the thickness of the walls, which they gloried in, instead of God for their salvation from Babylon’s armies, God showed them that their trust was misplaced. And the writer says, “I am the man who has seen and felt affliction. “ Later verses will help us understand that God was at work.
God had a gracious and merciful purpose in the war, to bring His wayward people back to Himself. And further verses prove that to be true.
Some theologians believe that the song in chapter 3 could belong to a portion of the Judean congregation that were under the affliction and conviction of sin. I can see that.
“I am the man...that is afflicted by sin...”...” the only man” that is feeling the weight of my sin upon my soul.
John Bunyon describes Christian as being very much comforted upon hearing someone quoting scripture while he walked through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. For then Christian realized that there were others in the same place of trouble and struggle as he was...”I'm not the only one.”
“he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light;”
    ‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:2‬ ‭ESV‬‬
God has put this sinner in a place of thick darkness, where there is no light. The conviction of sin pressing upon him was bad enough. But now the darkness proves that there is no help here except God and Him alone. Religion doesn't comfort. O but for a little light...so it wouldn't be so scary.
“He has walled me about so that I cannot escape; he has made my chains heavy;”
    ‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:7‬ ‭ESV‬‬
I have felt this often, friends. Pressed down with guilt. Looking for any ray of light to console me in the dark night of my soul. Walled about, no escaping the conviction of my sin, and a heaviness of heart that I cant seem to lift or get out from under.
O Lord is there any help for a man afflicted by sin? “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “ “therefore I will hope in him.”
    ‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:21-24‬ ‭
And where is that hope of forgiveness, a second chance to know His joy and light and hope...?
Jesus, the same one who died on the cross to pay my sin debt, 2000 years ago, ever lives to make intercession for me, including bringing a heavy conviction upon me so I won't stay comfortable in my careless sinning. Praise His Name!

The bible reading is in Jeremiah 51,52, the last two chapters of the book.
“I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea before your very eyes for all the evil that they have done in Zion, declares the Lord. “
“Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, declares the Lord, which destroys the whole earth; I will stretch out my hand against you, and roll you down from the crags, and make you a burnt mountain. No stone shall be taken from you for a corner and no stone for a foundation, but you shall be a perpetual waste, declares the Lord.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭51:24-26‬ ‭ESV‬‬
God said through Jeremiah that He would one day repay Babylon. God said, “one day I will destroy you, O destroying mountain...even as I will destroy the whole earth...you who shed the blood of my people, I will stretch out my hand against and you will become a perpetual waste.”
God did bring Babylon down by the Medes and Persians. It was so phenomenal a defeat, that other nations would teach their children of the demise of Babylon the Great. But there was something in Jeremiah ‘s prophesy that has yet to be fulfilled...the total destruction of Babylon, which is modern day Iraq. Jeremiah prophesied that God would destroy Babylon like He would destroy the whole world. So apparently a part of this prophesy is yet to come. And we read about it in Revelations chapters 17,18.
Revelation has been referred to as the tale of two cities...Babylon and Jerusalem. It has also been referred to as the tale of two worlds...the world of sin and death and Satan and the World of Righteousness and Eternal Life and the Kingdom of God in Heaven.
Believers reading ahead to Revelations will see the contrasts between this world and Heaven, the contrasts between Babylon and the New Jerusalem. Believers reading Revelations will always be confronted with an inescapable question: Which God will you worship and which city will you love and live for?
O friends, that ‘s the whole point of God’s judgments...God ‘s dealings in the world of man...all the way back to the day of Jeremiah and the Babylonian exile of unfaithful Judah and the destruction of Babylonia by the Persians later...which God will you worship and which city will you love and live for?
“And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.””
    ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭17:3-5‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Babylon would one day be completely destroyed, but not just the physical place in the middle east, but what it represents...the “love the world” perspective.
In Revelations the harlot that entices all of us, (Babylon the Great), is the seductress of “loving the world instead of our Savior God”.
Let us listen to God’s word describe “Babylon living and loving”...“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Who are we going to worship... who are we going to love? The things of this world, or the Father?
For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh (moral impurity)and the desires of the eyes (greed) and pride of life (bitterness) —is not from the Father but is from the world...Babylon the Great.
    ‭‭1 John‬ ‭2:15-16
O Lord, the Judeans would be encouraged by Jeremiah’s prophesy of Babylon’s demise. And we as believers today on this side of the cross, we too can be encouraged that one day the seductress that targets our hearts and minds today to the love the world rather than You...she will be destroyed too. Praise your name.
    Have a great day

The bible reading comes from Jeremiah 49,50.
Judah and Israel had been taken captive by the Babylonians. This prophecy of Jeremiah is about God’s judgment upon Babylon for sure. Just like His judgment upon Egypt for their unbelief and their brutality toward His people. Within this prophecy, God would give his exiled people hope for their deliverance from the power of Babylon and their restoration to the promised land.
Now...These Judean exiles lived far away from their homeland, but they cried day and night when they remembered Zion. Listen to the text...“In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, the people of Israel and the people of Judah shall come together, weeping as they come, and they shall seek the Lord their God. They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, saying, “Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.’”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭50:4-5‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Did you catch that hope...brothers and sisters of Israel and Judah “will come together”. They had been divided now in exile, in Babylon they were coming together. They had fought against one another for generations now.
That’s not the way of the original promised land kids. They fought for each other not against each other. They provided for and protected one another in the beginning. But for years and years, they have sided against one another and plotted with each other's enemies to take down one another’s security and economy.
But now, under the disciplining hand of God, once separated and divided, Israelis and Judeans “were coming together”.
How many parents and children “came back together”? Wonder how many estranged brothers and sisters and cousins “came back together” under the pressure of the Babylonian exile. Apparently many came back together.
Jeremiah even prophesied “how” those reunions would happen and how they would look. Words like “weeping” were used, indicating a repentance, a brokenness over personal sin...sin against God...and sin against each other.
I have seen that and been in the midst of it myself, Friends. Ive seen separated husbands and wives come back together weeping and asking each other for forgiveness. I have been broken over my sin against a brother...in the midst of a church service...in my car on the road...in my office counseling others, the Spirit would convict me of my need to make some things right between myself and a brother or sister....and I would go weeping and we came back together...revived with new joy snd strength to serve Christ.
Judah and Israel would “come back together”... “weeping”...because they were “seeking to come back to the Lord”.
That’s how we pray and how we counsel ourselves and others dealing with division and disharmony in the family...” come back” to the Lord”...or “come” to the Lord...”He wants to be the balm of Gilead that heals and repairs and restores marriages, families, and church families. He wants to be the Savior of your relationships. And Jeremiah foretells of “another group” of Judeans in Babylon...“They shall ask the way to Zion”, ““with faces turned toward it,” saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten...
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ 50:5
In those days prior to Judah’s deliverance from Babylon, prior to Babylon’s ruin at the hands of the Medo-Persian Empire, there will be “Judeans ask the way to Heaven”. With sincerity and faces that say...I want God...I don't just want to know some things about Him...I desperately want to Know Him Personally...please show me the way...
Oh, friends, that’s spiritual awakening on the heels of revival in the hearts of contrite and repentant believers.
Lord do that again in our day...in our lives, families, and churches...do it again...and start with me and mine.
    Have a great day
