The La Trobe Institute of Molecular Science will be housed in a new multi-purpose scientific facility designed to change work habits in University teaching and research. Traditionally scientists were recruited to teach science in universities on the basis of their research strengths and provided with a laboratory to do their research and train research students. This has led to a bunker mentality. With the funding of LIMS, La Trobe University is exploring the future of science teaching and research by coming up with a building design that will provide a hub for a number of disciplines working in a shared environment where world class research and research training can occur alongside and in shared space with first class laboratory teaching.
