  • Not all Fats are Equal
Aphasia is a devastating communication disability that affects approximately 120,000 Australians and unfortunately people with aphasia often are misunderstood.
Dr Miranda Rose (Senior Research Fellow, Faculty of Health Sciences) and her team are working on ways to help improve the quality of life for people with aphasia through two strategies:
    - To try and prevent depression from developing in the first place through a very early tailored mood and communication intervention.
    - To expand community aphasia groups so that people with aphasia can develop rich social connections, get meaningful activity back in their life and develop a positive self-identity.

  • Carbon
Professor Nick Hoogenraad (Head of Molecular Sciences, La Trobe University) on carbon, why it is one of the important molecules, and how it is the building block on which life is based.

  • LIMS Indigenous Sculptures Unveiled
A large scale public sculpture has been unveiled outside the LIMS building at La Trobe University. The work by Reko Rennie is titled Murri Totems and comprises four brightly coloured multi-faceted columns. It combines traditional Aboriginal ceremonial poles with geometric shapes found in nature and western science.

  • The Water Molecule
Professor Nick Hoogenraad (Head of School of Molecular Sciences, La Trobe University) talks about the molecular structure of water, its properties, characteristics, and how it’s essential to all life on the planet.

  • Sex and the Future of Men
Professor Jenny Graves (Distinguished Professor, La Trobe Institute of Molecular Science) explores how a study of Australian animals can provide insights into how chromosomes and genes determine sex and how they evolved.
The Y chromosome that determines male sex traits in humans is predicted to disappear in just 5 million years. If humans don’t become extinct, new sex-determining genes and chromosomes will evolve, maybe leading to the evolution of new hominid species.
