  • Re-lifing apartment buildings. A co-design model emerges.
What happens when privately-owned apartment buildings need upgrade? Multiple owners - all with their own ideas - can mean it's easier to sell and move, rather than refurbish.
But two Sydney researchers want to change that - and give architects and homeowners the tools they need to co-design a new life for old apartment buildings. We sat down with UNSW's Dr Hazel Easthope and University of Sydney's Dr Sandra Loschke to unpack their vision for a more participatory and sustainable approach to apartment redevelopment - research which is being supported by the NSW ARB. • Building communities - Professor Kristien Ring on the Baugruppen phenomenon
Professor Kristien Ring delivered the 2017 World Architecture Day oration at the 11th annual Sydney Architecture Festival. But while we had her with us, we took the chance to find out more about how 'baugruppe' (or building groups) might work in Australia as a new form of urban community living.
Thanks to our friends at the Old Clare Hotel, we took over the great old board room for our interview.

  • Pathways To Register as an architect
The NSW Architects Registration Board is tasked by the Architects Act to do 4 things; protect the consumer, inform the public, promote architecture, and register architects.
So how do you register an architect? If you’ve ever asked that question, this podcast is for you.
In some countries around the world, graduating from a 5 year degree in architecture is enough to make you an architect. But in Australia, a graduate must have a period of practical experience following university, and must have successfully completed an examination prior to applying for registration.
That’s because Australia defines the regulation of professional services as a consumer protection measure.
There are now more pathways to register as an architect. This podcast outlines those pathways, and gives you an insiders view on what examiners look for in candidates.
Hear from Melonie Bayl-Smith, the founder and director of Bijl Architecture, and the Convenor of pathways for the NSW Architects Registration Board - of which she is a Board member, and from Sydney architect and examiner, Ben Giles.

  • Putting the STE(A)M in to STEM - architecture in the classroom
We love building a better understanding of architecture and design in the community by connecting the public, students, architects and others with information about architecture, design and the world around us.
One way we do this is to prepare teaching aids and resources for schools.
STEAMpop Co-Director and educator, Annette Mauer is a long-time collaborator and friend of the Board and has been instrumental in helping to develop the ARB's suite of teaching tools, are designed to help students use creative thinking for more effective learning.

  • Learning Thresholds: the Architecture Program Accreditation Procedure
We present the second Salon on Standards hosted by the UTS School of Architecture in association with the NSW Architects Registration Board.
This series invites experts in the field to discuss the standards and regulations that shape the profession of architecture in Australia. Documents like the Accreditation Procedure and Competency Standard are fundamental to architects and architecture. They provide the roadmap for how we accredit university programs, examine architects on their way to registration, right through their continuing professional development.
In this episode we go back to school to discuss the professional Accreditation of architectural education, which is guided in Australia and New Zealand by the Architecture Program Accreditation Procedures. So what standards do they measure? Who’s sets it? And does that standard even matter?
In this episode we are joined by Professor Sue Savage from the Queensland University of Technology, Kathlyn Loseby COO of Crone Architects, and Professor Gerard Reinmuth from the University of Technology Sydney.

  • Setting the standard: the National Standard of Competency for Architects
We present the first Salon on Standards hosted by the UTS School of Architecture in association with the NSW Architects Registration Board.
This series invites experts in the field to discuss the standards and regulations that shape the profession of architecture in Australia. Documents like the National Standard of Competency for Architects and the Accreditation Procedure are fundamental to architects and architecture. They provide the roadmap for how we accredit university programs, examine architects on their way to registration, right through their continuing professional development.
So where exactly did they come from? And how have they changed over the years to keep up with the profession? And do they actually work?
In this episode we’re joined by architect and Professor Kirsten Orr from the University of Melbourne, Dr Peter Raisbeck from the University of Melbourne, and Sydney architect Melonie Bayl-Smith, from Bijl Architecture.

  • Putting the Architects Regulations 2017 in context
On 1 September 2017, a new Architects Regulation went live after first inviting submissions from industry and other stakeholders earlier in the year. The new Regulations contain changes to how courses of architecture are accredited in NSW, how Board members are elected, and in the information that must be included in a written agreement prepared by an architect for their client.
