For two decades, Bouchra Khalili’s work has articulated contemporary migratory trajectories, colonial continuum, and the politics of memory of internationalist struggles and collective emancipation. In An Audio Family Album, Bouchra Khalili continues her investigation of Al Assifa’s methodology based on the dying tradition of Al-halqa, the oldest performing art in North Africa. She proposes an online archive of voices, bringing together stories of emancipation that have helped shape the memories and contemporary strategies of diaspora struggles and that, through this process, are passed on from one generation to the next.

Episode #3: Ceux de l’Exil avec Joachim Ben Yakoub

EN - Joachim is a writer and researcher based in Brussels. The son of a Tunisian father and a Belgian mother, Joachim shares his investigation of the first generation of North African activism in Belgium. In his contribution, he explores the work and legacy of Ahl El Hijra – a music band of North African immigrants in Brussels that was active in the mid-70s to early 80s. Ahl El Hijra’s work was committed to North African communities, using music to bear witness to the living conditions of migrant communities in Belgium. Ahl El Hijra mirrors the work of Al Assifa, which provided inspiration to Bouchra Khalili for The Tempest Society and her contribution to The Diasporic Schools. Like Ahl El Hijra, Al Assifa (1972-1978) united a group of North African factory workers in Paris who used theatre, music, street performance and audio recordings to organise migrant communities in France and raise awareness of migrants’ living conditions.

FR - Joachim est un écrivain et chercheur basé à Bruxelles. Fils d'un père tunisien et d'une mère belge, Joachim partage son enquête sur la 1re génération d'activisme nord-africain en Belgique. Dans sa contribution, il fouille le travail et l'héritage d'Ahl El Hijra - un groupe de musique composé d'immigrants nord-africains à Bruxelles, actif au milieu des années 70 et au début des années 80. Le travail d'Ahl El Hijra s'est engagé en faveur des communautés nord-africaines, en utilisant la musique pour témoigner des conditions de vie des communautés d'immigrés en Belgique. Ahl El Hijra reflète l'œuvre d'Al Assifa, qui a inspiré à Bouchra Khalili The Tempest Society et cette contribution à The Diasporic Schools. Comme Ahl El Hijra, Al Assifa (1972-1978) a réuni à Paris un groupe d'ouvriers d'usine nord-africains qui ont utilisé le théâtre, la musique, les spectacles de rue et les enregistrements audio pour organiser les communautés d'immigrés en France et susciter des attentes quant à leurs conditions de vie.

Hij is de zoon van een Tunesische vader en een Belgische Moeder en deelt zijn onderzoek over de eerste generatie van Noord-Afrikaans activisme in België. In zijn bijdrage duikt hij in het werk en de erfenis van Ahl El Hijra – een muziekgroep die actief was in het midden van de jaren ’70 tot de vroege jaren ’80, bestaande uit Noord-Afrikaanse immigranten in Brussel. Ahl El Hijra’s repertoire verwijst naar Noord-Afrikaanse gemeenschappen en gebruikt muziek om getuigenissen over te brengen van de levensomstandigheden van migrantengemeenschappen in België. Ahl El Hijra weerspiegelt het werk van Al Assifa, dat Bouchra Khalili inspireerde voor The Tempest Society en deze bijdrage aan The Diasporic Schools. Zoals Ahl El Hijra in Brussel, kwam in Parijs Al Assifa (1972-1978) samen, een groep Noord-Afrikaanse arbeiders die theater, muziek, straatperformances en audio-opnames gebruikten om de migrantengemeenschappen in Frankrijk te organiseren en om de aandacht te vestigen op de levensomstandigheden van migranten.
