Ikọ is a podcast conceived by artist Otobong Nkanga and curator Sandrine Honliasso in the framework of Nkanga’s ongoing work Carved to Flow, started in 2017 and acting as a support structure for initiatives engaged in nurturing social, cultural and economic life in distant and connected geographies. Ikọ is thought as an elastic space that stretches towards multiple geographies, encompasses distinct fields of study and relate heterogenous practices to arouse new readings and modes of creating meanings, relations and goods. Bringing together a wide range of voices intermingling with various audio proposal, Ikọ seeks to expand approaches to contemporary cultural and artistic practices and to allow a plurality of voices to be heard.

EN - In this first episode, we meet Aisha Conté, founder of Nyara a brand and store of phyto-aromatherapy products and jewelry based in Senegal. Otobong Nkanga will be in discussion with Aisha Conté, a doctor in Pharmacy who will take us on her personal journey, from working with the pharmaceutical industry to developing and exploring skin and health care products made from local ingredients. Aisha Conté will expand on different aspects of Nyara and how they connect with the social, environmental and economic structures within the Senegalese context and beyond. In the second part of this podcast, Sandrine Honliasso presents Ikọ Zone – for each episode, a musician, poet or writer share with us a part of their world. In this first episode we will listen to a sound intervention by Adelle Nqeto, singer and songwriter from South Africa living in Berlin.

FR - Dans ce premier épisode nous rencontrons Aisha Conté, fondatrice de Nyara, une marque et des magasins de produits de phyto-aromathérapie et de bijoux basée au Sénégal. Otobong Nkanga s’entretien avec Aisha Conté qui nous relate son parcours : Doctoresse en pharmacie, elle a d’abord été employée dans l’industrie pharmaceutique, pour prendre ensuite son indépendance et entamer un travail de recherche afin de développer des cosmétiques et des soins pour la peau élaborés à partir de produits locaux. Aisha Conté éclaire différents aspects de la démarche entreprise avec Nyara et la manière dont cette activité est connectée avec les structures et les dimensions sociales, économiques et environnementales autant au niveau sénégalais que mondial. Dans la seconde partie du podcast, Sandrine Honliasso nous présente Ikọ Zone, une capsule au sein de laquelle un·e musicien·ne, un·e poète·étesse, un·e écrivain·e partage avec nous son univers. Dans ce premier épisode nous écoutons une intervention sonore de la chanteuse et parolière Sud-Africaine basée à Berlin Adelle Nqeto.

In deze eerste aflevering maken we kennis met Aisha Conté, oprichtster van Nyara, een merk en een winkel van fyto-aromatherapeutische producten en juwelen, gevestigd in Senegal. Otobong Nkanga gaat in gesprek met Aisha Conté, doctor in de farmaceutische wetenschappen die ons haar levensverhaal onthult. Waar ze aanvankelijk in de farmaceutische industrie aan het werk was, onderzoekt en ontwikkelt ze naderhand huid- en gezondheidsproducten gemaakt van lokale ingrediënten. Aisha Conté licht de verschillende aspecten van Nyara toe en hoe ze verweven zijn met sociale, economische en milieugerelateerde structuren, zowel in de Senegalese context als op wereldschaal. In het tweede deel van deze podcast presenteert Sandrine Honliasso Ikọ Zone – een onderdeel van de aflevering, waarin een muzikant.e, dichter.es of schrijver ons in hun wereld uitnodigt. In deze eerste aflevering luisteren we naar een geluidsinterventie van de Zuid-Afrikaanse, in Berlijn wonende zangeres en tekstschrijfster Adelle Nqeto.
