Are carbon capture promises overshadowing Canada's climate pledges

Listen Later

The debate centers on whether carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a viable primary solution for Canada's emissions or an unproven technology that delays the transition to renewable energy.  Critics, including professor Mark Winfield from York University and groups like Environmental Defence and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), contend that the new deal sends a signal that Canada is "deprioritizing" climate change action. They point out that current CCUS projects capture only a tiny fraction (about 0.5%) of Canada's total emissions, are expensive, energy-intensive, and unproven at the necessary scale.
