Reasoning Through the Bible

Are You Able to Drink My Cup? (Matthew 20:20-34) - Session 41

Listen Later

The mother of James and John come and ask Jesus if they can sit next to Him in His kingdom. Jesus asks them whether they are ready to drink the cup that He is about to drink, and the two sons think they are, showing they have a misunderstanding of God’s economy. Jesus reveals some deep truths about His relationship with the Father. In God’s kingdom, honor is given to those who serve the most.  Sometimes we ask God for things and His answer to us is “You do not know what you ask.”

We also meet two blind men who the crowd tries to keep away from Jesus, but they will not be kept away. These two men give us a great example that we should not be satisfied until we get to Jesus.

  • Are Christians sometimes asked to drink the same cup as Jesus?
  • What can we learn about Jesus and the Godhead from this passage?
  • What is the proper attitude that Christians should have with other Christians?
  • How do we keep division and dissention out of the body of Christ?
