Are you empowering AAC users, or censoring, and maybe even accidentally hurting them? AAC users have little to no control over what words they have to communicate. They rely on whoever programs their device. This could lead to well-meaning individuals inadvertently censoring an AAC user. Worse, it leaves AAC users unable to say anything about the abuse they may be suffering.
Ms. Hali Strickler is an AAC Services Coordinator for TechOWL at the Institute for our Whole Lives. She provides AAC, assistive technology support, and services to individuals with complex communication needs. Hali received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Speech, Language, and Hearing Science from Temple University. She is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist with experience in the public school setting.
