Are You Taking Time for Yourself? - Rest & Refresh

Listen Later

You have to make time for yourself. No one else is going to do it for you. You are responsible for you. Even if it means letting others down or needing to ask for help later, it's got to be done.

Show Notes:
I have a problem with setting some unreasonable expectations for myself. And a lot of those expectations are based on not wanting to disappoint others. Which gets me in some trouble because I end up not taking breaks, taking time for myself because the idea of letting others down really crushes me.

A lot of this is about not properly setting personal boundaries, letting my anxiety get the best of me, worrying about other people’s judgement, feeling like I could be getting behind in whatever I’m doing & thinking I just don’t deserve the time right now. I’m sure there are many more reasons we all could come up with, which in the end don’t really matter.

I don’t like the idea of people thinking I am weak or lazy. I used to be this person that was busy and go-go-go all the time. I would get complimented for how much I got done, how efficient I was with my time & how I kept it all together. Spoiler: I didn’t keep it all together. I just hide my freak-outs really well. I hit a breaking point where my mental health got so messed up because I cared more about how I looked to other people & getting praise for being the mom that does it all than taking care of my mind.

I want you to know the praise isn’t worth it. The respect you get for appearing to be superhuman, the fake appreciation and the popularity for appearing perfect is all garbage.

I recently went on vacation with my family and didn’t prep podcast episodes before I left. I didn’t make the time because I had work & family stuff to do and those things were my priority. I felt kind of bad about it, because I knew I was letting some people down, but I had to make peace with it because that is where I fit in time for myself. I had no desire to push myself to the brink of stress before I went on vacation. I wanted to go into it excited & happy, not stressed & worried. And now I’m back, putting out new episodes and it’s fine. But the only reason this was an easy decision for me to make is because I had slowly been making this type of decision more & more.

You have to make time for yourself. No one else is going to do it for you. You are responsible for you. Even if it means letting others down, needing to ask for help to catch-up later, missing out on something, having others cast their unimportant opinions on you or pushing through the anxiety of not constantly being on the go. And I get why slowing down is scary. It means you have to actually look at what’s going on around you, good & bad. But this is where healing begins, where self-awareness starts & how personal boundaries are built.

And let’s not forget that taking time for yourself is also the only way you can have enough energy & attention to continue to help others without burning out.

Here are some quick ideas on how to make time for yourself if this is new for you:

  1. Leave Work On Time
  2. Dedicate Certain Weeknights to Yourself
  3. Schedule Events in Advance
  4. Create Routines with Self-Care Time
  5. Learn to Delegate Work to Others
