Lyric Opera has no hills but the aisles and halls will be alive with "The Sound of Music." We can all sing "Edelweiss" as Larry offers selections from this beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical which will include the original Maria from Broadway, Mary Martin.

Bring out the castanets as Larry takes you to Spain for a very rare authentic flamenco recording sung by famed Spanish mezzo of the 1920s and 30s, Conchita Supervia. Enjoy a zarzuela selection by Rolando Villazon and a cradle song by Shirley Verrett. Then stop by Granada with Victoria de los Angeles and Placido Domingo

Larry takes you on a journey to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales to explore the rich song tradition of the British Isles as sung by Joan Sutherland, Simon Keenlyside, Eileen Farrell, Bryn Terfel, and the King’s Singers.

Today’s program is a richly melodic and ear-pleasing collection of quartets from Verdi’s "Rigoletto," Puccini’s "La rondine, Flotow’s "Martha" and Sondheim’s "Follies," plus a French rarity from Reynaldo Hahn’s "La marchand de Venise"

Alfredo Catalani (1854-1893) was an Italian opera composer who had an all too brief life. He was becoming increasingly more prominent when he died at age 39 from tuberculosis. We will hear selections from his two best remembered operas, Loreley and La Wally.

Mozart’s La Clemeza di Tito has come for the first time to Lyric Opera of Chicago. Larry will offer selections from this opera seria premiered in 1791 which was the last year of Mozart’s life.

Chicago will be treated to an operatic rarity as Lyric Opera presents Dvorak’s Russalka. A highlight will be the justly famous Song to the Moon.

We note Lincoln’s birthday with Aaron Copeland’s Lincoln Portrait as narrated by Katherine Hepburn. Stravinsky’s Elegy for JFK reminds us of America’s enduring tragedy and Richard Nixon goes to Beijing in Nixon in China.

L’amour, L’amour, Toujours L’amour is the theme for Valentine’s Day, the day for lovers. It’s all love duets in a program of music by Puccini, Saint-Saens, Korngold, Romberg and Kern.
