This week’s program features songs about the three armed forces: navy, army and air force. Starting the program is a song based on a real life incident during World War II – the pursuit and sinking of the German battleship the Bismarck. Johnny Horton turned this into his best selling song Sink The Bismarck in the late sixties. Another song based on a real ship is Wreck Of The John B, sung by prolific singer Jimmie Rodgers. The Vietnam War was the inspiration for two Aussie songs – Axiom’s Arkansas Grass and the Johnny Young song, sung by Ronnie Burns, Smiley. The air force is featured in Leo Sayer’s Aviation and the navy in the Village People’s In The Navy.
