    With the massive success of 2017′s Coco, Disney has brought another Latinx story to the big screen this Thanksgiving, Encanto.

    Set in the mountains of Colombia, Encanto tells the tale of Maribel Madrigal, a young Colombian woman who is the only one in her magical family to not have powers. When she learns that their magic is in danger, she embarks on a journey to save her family and their home. Reporter Ayline Rebollo tells us more about the significance of the film in the Latinx community.

  • Annenberg’s mega story behind its Media Center Assignment Desk

    The names Gilbert & Jacki Cisneros are more than just a name displayed on the Annenberg Media Center’s Assignment Desk. Jameela Hammond and Jacki Cisneros both worked the Assignment Desk at KNBC. One day, while Jacki was preparing to send her resume out, told Jameela, “I wish I would just win the lotto.” Days later, Jacki and her husband, Gilbert Cisneros won the California Mega Lottery jackpot — $266 million.

    Jacki loves to play the “What if” game, when she poses a hypothetical question to her husband who never loves to play the game. On their way to Outback Steakhouse, they passed by the local Lottery office and Gilbert decided to play the game. Their “What if” turned into a discussion of how they want to give back to their alma maters and their community. They did exactly that when they won the lottery, establishing The Gilbert & Jacki Cisneros Foundation, dedicated to increasing the education level of Latino students.

  • Battle of the Lightspeed Sabers

    The Los Angeles chapter of the Lightspeed Saber League practices Wednesday nights at Mike’s Bikes in Mid-city.  Everyone’s welcome at this fencing-meets-'Star Wars' sport that’s played all over the country. Their sabers glow in the dark just like in the movies and sometimes they make sounds too. 

    Team captain Tony Zaldua Jr. helps train the squad. He describes the sport and introduces a few team members in this sound portrait.
