When the COVID-19 pandemic hit communities across the country, one of the biggest questions was: What will still be standing when it ends?

Would small businesses survive? Would large corporations survive? Would anything survive?

On this episode of Around the Block, we talk to three local small business owners about how they've adapted and even grown during the  unprecedented challenges that 2020 threw at all of them.

This episode is divided into 3 parts:

1) Davey Froman, Miners & Monroe
2) Brandee Johnson, LimeLight Marketing
3) Mat Burton, Brick + Mortar

On this episode of Around the Block, we talk to Crawford County Health Officer Dr. Tim Stebbins about the COVID-19 vaccine and how we are administering it here in our area.

Earlier this week, the nation honored the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., a man who devoted his life to racial and social justice in America.

While the US has made much progress on issues of race and equality since the 1960s, we still have so much work to do … as this past year reminded us over and over again.

In the summer of 2020, at the height of social unrest, we talked to two people at the forefront of the fight for racial equality here in Pittsburg: D'Andre Phillips Coble, then the president of the Pittsburg State University Black Student Association, and Deatrea Rose, the university’s chief diversity officer.

On this episode of Around the Block, D'Andre and Deatrea are back to talk about what, if any, progress has been made since we last spoke.

Leadership.

In many respects, it's more important in tough times than in good.

And, well, 2020 was full of tough times.

How did our city, county, and state manage to survive and even grow during a year full of unprecedented challenges? By working together.

On this two-segment episode of Around the Block, we talk to our local and state leaders about leading through a crisis.

Segment 1 features Pittsburg City Commissioner Dawn Mcnay, Crawford County Commissioner Jeremy Johnson, and Pittsburg Deputy City Manager Jay Byers.

Following that discussion, we are joined by Kansas Lt. Governor David Toland.

Hindsight is 2020.

Perhaps there is no statement more apt for the times we're in. As we begin this new year, we can't help but look back at the unique challenges that 2020 wrought. For most of January 2021, we're going to focus on the lessons we've learned from the past 12 months and how we can use those experiences to shape a brighter future.

On this episode, we focus on education. How did it work? How were schools able to operate effectively during an unprecedented pandemic?

This two-part episode focuses on both K-12 and higher education.

Part 1 is a conversation with USD 250 Superintendent Rich Proffitt and St. Mary's Colgan President of Schools Dennis Burke.

Part 2 is a look inside a university classroom with Pittsburg State Professor Dr. Mark Peterson.

In a year that has taken so much away from us, it's important to pause and take note of what we do have.

On this episode of Around the Block, we discuss the power of gratitude with Father Larry Parker from Mother of God parish in Oswego, Kansas.

One of the most challenging aspects of leadership is leading during hard times. And the year 2020 has been one hard time after another.

In this 2-part episode of Around the Block, we talk to Pittsburg State University President Steve Scott about leading the university through the COVID-19 pandemic and the many other challenges that the nation and world have faced this year.
