The religious leaders were confident that they were first in God's kingdom because of their piety and righteousness. Jesus, however, 'attacked' them because they failed to walk the talk so they were last in God's kingdom. The tax collectors, sinners and prostitutes were entering the kingdom because they repented in response to the messages of John the Baptist and Jesus. Thus the last became first. The parable of the sower is a parable focused not on the farmer nor the way he sowed but on the different grounds which would yield different amount of harvest. The grounds in the parable refers to one's heart.
