  • Sheriff Mike Smith From A&E's 60 Days In

This season on “60 Days In,” seven participants voluntarily go undercover in the Utah County Jail to shed light on an influx of drugs, contraband and gang activity to help the Sheriff identify issues and create positive change for both inmates and staff. The Utah County Jail, one of the largest in the state, is run by Sheriff Mike Smith who was elected in 2018 and is currently serving his second 4-year term as the Utah County Sheriff. Prior to entering the facility, Sheriff Smith introduces the participants to one another so that once booked, they can work as a team to complete their missions. For the first time, a new rule is enacted that once you give the distress signal, you will be pulled out of the program. With no time for second chances or moments of weakness, the fearless participants, each with their own personal motives, make a pact to not quit the program early and to do whatever it takes to expose the flaws in the system.
Sheriff Mike Smith has 30 years of law enforcement experience. He began his law enforcement career with the Pleasant Grove Police Department in Utah. While employed for PGPD, he was fortunate to serve the citizens of Pleasant Grove as a patrol officer, motor officer, detective, internal affairs officer, and a member of a joint criminal apprehension team with the U.S. Marshal’s Office. Mike also served for 18 years on the Utah County Metro SWAT Team as a Team Leader and Forward Operational Commander. He rose through the ranks at PGPD and served as a sergeant, lieutenant, captain and in 2012 was appointed as the Chief of Police.

  • He's A History Novilist Mark Sullivan Releases All The Glimmering Stars

As many as 300,000 child soldiers are currently being forced to fight around the world. The UN deems it a global security issue because radicalized, militant, dehumanized children grow up to be radicalized, militant, dehumanized adults. One of the most egregious episodes in modern history was Joseph Kony’s 30-year reign of terror in Uganda, southern Sudan, and Congo as his Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) kidnapped as many as 37,000 boys and girls, turning the males into fearsome, soulless soldiers and the girls into slaves, sexual and otherwise. Two of those young people—Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori—escaped and survived to later bear witness at the LRA war crimes trial in the Hague. Their harrowing and triumphant story is the basis for ALL THE GLIMMERING STARS and was brought to Sullivan by a former squadron commander of SEAL Team 6 and the former CIA chief in Uganda.

“In an earlier life I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, and I responded to the tale and the cause immediately. I went to Uganda and spent weeks with Anthony and Florence. I also came away believing that their story brought to life in a novel could have a dramatic impact on the way kids in war zones are treated. To that end, I wrote the novel with the intention that it would not only grip readers with a remarkable story well-told, but also contribute to End Child Soldiering, a non-profit that works to prevent kids being forced into combat and to rehabilitate youngsters who have already suffered that tragedy.”

Despite its haunting depiction of the shocking and desperate situation Anthony, Florence and many others endured, ALL THE GLIMMERING STARS is a remarkably life-affirming tale, filled with humanity and love.
