Life is hard. Too hard for many of us to navigate alone. That’s why we sometimes need to reach out to someone to help us understand it all. To keep pointing us in the right direction. Emily had spent her entire life trying to be one of the good ones. Trying to make a difference at an elite university in New Jersey, where she had been a curious student and now, for almost twenty years, an overworked psychologist.
Throughout my forty three years of Broadcasting I've credited Lonnie Bell from KOYN in Billings, Montana for introducing me to the future of music. So often radio people get locked up in what's hot right now. That vision into what could become is too difficult to enter. Lonnie was an all out fan of this new band on the Nashville scene. It was Alabama. To this day I can still hear Lonnie telling me to pay attention. Take notes! Know where you were the day you played every new song from Alabama. I caught the band live in the latter part of the 80's at the old Charlotte Coliseum. Finally got to share not one but two conversations with them. They were that band that Lonnie wanted me to never take my eyes off. Which is why it hurt really bad when word got to me that the music world had lost Jeff Cook from Alabama. The strange coincidence? Two hours later we lost Lonnie Bell.
Only the universe knows where the needle is in a haystack. When located will it be a tool or a trophy?

Coworker Bill found it in his heart to identify one of my vocal crutches. In radio that's what the on air talent do. It's a habit of saying the same thing over and over. Or getting into a question or responding the same way. Bill felt like he was crossing the line. No! A major tool missing from our modern way of sharing conversation is having a vocal crutch buster as part of our circle. Those that have the courage to sharpen our speaking skills in public. The world is changing so quickly but what we're talking about and how we're talking isn't. We're getting lazy with how we develop a thought turned into a conversation. It's as if our habit is reverting back to what we know instead of feeling a need to learn more. Coworker Ryan asks me the same 20 questions each week. I don't have the courage to vocal crutch bust him. I'm part of the problem. Instead of helping him find newer ways to stay interesting I just keep answering the same ole way.
